Thomas said, “Sharon may be Theo’s mother, but she’s not yours. And while you might be Theo’s father, you and Sharon stopped being anything to each other a long time ago. So don’t talk about what’s right or wrong–you’ve lost that right.”Â
Sharon was speechless.Â
That tongue of Thomas was still as sharp as ever.Â
Thomas had been gone all night, but neither Sharon nor Carter thought much of it. They assumed he had been with Theo the entire time.Â
Carter wasn’t the kind of man who enjoyed pointless arguments, least of all childish ones. He ignored Thomas entirely and turned back to Sharon.Â
“Sharon, don’t worry about the funds,” he said. “I’ll help you find a way. The Biggs Group can free up about 500 million in liquid assets for now. As for the rest, I’ll make arrangements. You have my word–you’ll have what you need within three days.”Â
At that, Thomas’s gaze shifted to Sharon. “Why do you suddenly need that much money?”Â
Sharon briefly explained her plan to acquire a stake in Silverstone Group.Â
“Miles is missing,” she said. “Tracking him down for revenge isn’t realistic for now. Instead of wasting time, I might as well turn this to my advantage. His father’s preparing to run in the upcoming election–this is the perfect time to negotiate with the Silverstone family. Once the election’s over, he’ll be far harder to deal with.Â
“And even if we find Miles, what then? Make him apologize? He didn’t succeed in what he planned, and since the Silverstone and Kalen families are old allies, crippling or killing him isn’t an option. The Silverstones would never allow it.Â
“Rather than let the Kalen family use my suffering as leverage to squeeze benefits from the Silverstones–only for them to walk away with all the rewards–I’d rather strike first. At least that way, the pain I endured won’t be for nothing.”Â
It was a strategy Sharon had come up with on her own.Â
That, more than anything, made Carter realize just how much she’d changed.Â
In the world of adults, there was no right or wrong–only gains and losses. 1Â
If Sharon had insisted on pursuing vengeance, the best she could hope for was an apology–something symbolic, worth nothing.Â
But now, in her position, she couldn’t afford the luxury of acting on emotion.Â
And the Kalen family? They’d no doubt planned to use her case to extort concessions from the Silverstones, collect the benefits, and then let the matter quietly fade after a public apology.Â
Sharon’s decision was pragmatic–mature.Â
Yet Carter couldn’t shake the tightness in his chest.Â
How much pain, he wondered, had she gone through to become this calm and calculating?Â
Thomas arched a brow. “The so–called evidence linking Jamie and Miles–it’s fabricated, isn’t it?”Â
Sharon froze. “How do you know?”Â
Thomas replied, “Jamie isn’t the type to leave such an obvious trail. The only explanation is that someone doctored the proof. The fact that Miles and Jamie were seen entering the same club doesn’t prove they were colluding.Â
“But Miles openly admitted to targeting you, and the Silverstone family’s been nervous ever since. They likely suspect Jamie was involved, even if they’re not sure to what extent. So when you presented your ‘evidence,‘ they believed you had somethingÂ
1/2Â
concrete.”Â
He paused, glancing meaningfully at Carter. “In truth… you were bluffing them, weren’t you?Â
“After all, the details of Miles’s dealings with Jamie were never known to the Silverstone family. Now that Miles is missing–no body, no witness–your so–called evidence, real or fake, is impossible for them to disprove.”Â
A faint, dangerous gleam flickered in Carter’s dark eyes.Â
Thomas had guessed it–down to the last detail.Â
