Just as Sharon and Thomas were about to leave, a voice called out from behind them. 

“Sharon.” 

She turned and saw Clark. 

Her lips curved into a polite smile. “Uncle Clark. Did you need something?” 

Clark returned her smile warmly. “Sharon, you haven’t met your grandparents yet, have you? When you have a moment, I’d like to take you to the McKinzie estate. They were overjoyed to learn they have another granddaughter. They haven’t stopped talking about you and are eager to meet you.” 

Sharon’s tone remained courteous but distant. “Rick mentioned he misses them as well. I’ll plan to visit with my brothers when the time is right. If you’ll excuse me, Uncle Clark, Sebastian, I have other matters to attend to. We’ll talk again soon.” 1 

Before Clark could reply, she turned and left with Thomas. 

Clark’s smile vanished, his expression hardening. 

Years ago, 

a McKinzie had caused a fatal accident while leveraging the Kalen family’s name. The scandal had caused the three Kalen brothers to distance themselves from the McKinzies completely. 

Their occasional visits to the McKinzie elders ceased, and business from the Kalen Group dwindled. 

It was clear as day: the Kalens were drawing a line between themselves and the McKinzie family. 

Now, the rumor was that Sharon held ten percent of the company’s original shares. 

If they could win her over, the McKinzie family might have a chance to regain its former status. 

They had assumed that Sharon, having grown up outside this world of privilege, would be naive and easily manipulated. A little familial warmth and a few small favors should have been enough to earn her trust.

Back in her office, Sharon watched as Thomas swept the room with a sleek, handheld device. 

“What are you doing?” she asked. 

“Checking for surveillance,” he replied, his tone matter–of–fact. 

After a thorough scan, he finally lowered the device. “It’s clean for now. But don’t get complacent. Clear today doesn’t mean clear tomorrow. We should do this daily.” 

Sharon nodded. “I’ll leave that in your hands.” 

Thomas studied her. “How did the presentation go?”

Her gaze turned analytical. “Just as you predicted. My mom’s former allies are not in strong positions. Half have already defected to my dad’s camp. Only about twenty percent remain loyal to her memory, with another thirty percent playing the neutral field.” 

In other words, even if she won over every neutral shareholder, the best she could achieve was a stalemate with Richard. The outlook was grim. 

It wasn’t just about their preference for Victoria, the illegitimate daughter. It was more likely that Richard and his sons were using her as a pretext to reclaim the remaining original shares held by Sharon and her mother’s last loyalists. 

Thomas said, “A stalemate can be broken. Since they want your shares, they’ll have to make a move. That means, within the year, they’ll start setting traps–ensuring you can’t establish a foothold at the Kalen Group.” 

No sooner had he spoken than a soft knock sounded at the door. 

A young man entered, offering a slight, respectful nod. 

“Ms. McKinzie,” he said with a polished smile. “I’m Enzo McNish, your new personal assistant.” 

He was tall and lean, with strikingly handsome, boyish features–the kind of look that was immensely popular. 

Even by entertainment industry standards, he would have turned heads. 

If Wendy were here, she would have tried to sign him on the spot.
