Chapter 1044

The sharp click of leather soles echoed on the concrete floor, growing closer.

Johanna’s nerves pulled tant. She debated keeping up the act, pretending to be inconscious. Then, a distorted, robotic voice rasped through a modulator

“I know you’re awake.”

Caught, she abandoned the pretense. “Who are you?” she demanded, her voice steadier than she felt. “What do you want? Money?”

The man’s reply was casual, chilling “Money? I have all I need.”

A cold dread settled in her stomach. “Then what is this about?”

He gave a low chuckle. “I have a score to settle with Jamie. You’re the bait, Johanna. I’ve set a trap, and now we get to see if your brother is willing to walk into it. They say you two are close, raised together. I want to know if you’ll be the reason he escapes… or the reason he falls.”

Johanna was no fool. If Jamie didn’t come, she was dead. Still, she didn’t beg to call him. Instead, she stalled, probing for weakness. “Who are you? What did my brother do to you?”

Feigning vulnerability, she added, “I’m just a woman. Shouldn’t this stay between men?”

The man let out a harsh, grating laugh. “Your brother doesn’t seem to care about things ‘staying between men‘ when he’s putting his hands on women.”

‘Hands on women.‘

The phrase sent a cold jolt through Johanna. Jamie only ever harmed women for one reason: Victoria. The name clicked into place with terrifying clarity. If this was about Victoria, her abduction made a grim, horrible sense.

Rage flared, but she kept her voice controlled. “I’m innocent in whatever this is. If you’re a real man, face him directly. Why drag me into it?”

His tone turned predatory. “Whether I’m a ‘real man‘ is irrelevant. What matters is that you’re about to find out exactly what I’m capable of.”

A sliver of fear finally pierced her composure. “What are you going to do to me?”

His answer was simple, sickening. “I’ll give you a chance. Your brother will have thirty minutes from the moment I call him to get to the location I name. If he’s late… I’ll provide you with company. If the first man finishes and your brother still isn’t here, a second will take his place… then a third… until Jamie arrives.”

Her breath hitched, panic clawed its way up her throat. The scenario was horrifyingly familiar. A cold, damning realization washed over her.

“This is Sharon, isn’t it?” she accused, her voice sharp. “She sent you to do this.”

The man was silent for a beat. “Sharon? Why does everything come back to her? Maybe it was Wendy. Your brother used Wendy to threaten Sharon he crippled her hand she has every reason to hate you Don’t forget, Wendy has powerful friends. Someone like John Westin could have you snatched up without a second thought ”

“Are you detending Sharon?” Johanna shot back.

“Stating facts,” the man corrected, his voice cold “You’re missing the point if you’re busy blaming everyone else. I want you and Jamie to die knowing exactly why Today, your brother does not leave this place alive.”
