Scott had guessed correctly. Long before Silas went to fetch his assistant, Sharon had already warned Thomas. 

“If they make a move, don’t hold back. No need to be polite. Don’t worry about offending them,” she’d told him. 

As Sharon’s bodyguard, Thomas couldn’t afford to act on impulse every time; doing so would have ruined her plan. Still, he’d been prepared. 

When they reached the door to Richard’s office, the scene inside was chaotic. Richard’s face was ashen, his features twitching with strain. 

Silas strode forward, furious to find Sharon calmly seated on the sofa, drinking tea. In a blind flash of anger, he tipped her teacup to the floor. 

“Sharon, you have the nerve to sip tea right now? Do you know what you’ve dragged down on our family?” he snarled, hatred burning in his eyes. “Do you even know the families you’ve wounded? They’re bound to our business-one of them is tied to the project you just jeopardized.” 

Sharon lifted an eyebrow and smiled. “Silas, he made the first move. I acted in legitimate self-defense. He brandished a gun in Dad’s office-how was I supposed to know whether he meant to shoot me or to use the moment to attack Dad? If I hadn’t neutralized him and he’d accidentally fired, what then? Dad is the head of the Kalen Group; he cannot be harmed. Anything that threatens him must be eliminated at the source.” 

Her words, spoken with righteous calm, hit a chord. 

Richard-always suspicious by nature-paused, the anger draining from his face as reason crept in. 

Sharon had a point. Who could say whether the oil tycoon had intended to fire at her or to seize a chance to harm Richard? Had she stood idle and the gun misfired, the consequences would be unforgivable. 

Silas, however, roared, “That’s just an excuse! You did it to stir trouble for us, didn’t you? Is your purpose to destroy the Kalen family?” 

Sharon couldn’t help but laugh. “Silas, are you thinking straight? How would bringing down Kalen Group benefit me? I’m about to join the Kalen Group myself-if the company thrives, I stand to gain far more than I would from wrecking it. 

“Besides, you were the one who called me here to apologize. I’d barely spoken when the man pulled a gun. In a small office like that, Dad could have been hit. I acted to protect him. If Dad fell, who would provide for our comfortable life?” 

Her well-crafted defense made Silas flush red with fury. He opened his mouth to retort, but Richard cut him off. 

“Enough. Stop arguing. Sharon did nothing wrong. She was trying to protect me.” 

He threw Silas a cold glance that made Silas fall silent. Richard had clearly accepted Sharon’s explanation. To him, anyone who came armed into his office bore hostile intent. 

Sharon continued, “Dad, the root of this mess is those people who chased me that night. Why not track them down and hand them over to the oil tycoon and the financier? That would at least give them some accountability.
