Chapter 13
Rachel felt visibly uncomfortable with Donna’s sudden closeness, pulling herself free from the embrace. Just then, she noticed Vincent signaling Donna, who immediately wiped her tears and beamed with maternal affection.
“Rachel dear, I heard Aaron specially came to see you recently?”
“Oh dear, that boy is truly loyal and caring! Honestly, you two are perfect for each other. Some things are better left in the past–why dwell on them? We should all move forward, shouldn’t we?”
“Exactly,” Vincent chimed in. “Your wedding is set for year–end, right? Preparations should start soon. If you two unite, the Scott family’s future-”
“I’m Rachel, not Scott.” Rachel abruptly cut him off.
Vincent flushed crimson. Donna quickly smoothed things over: “Names don’t matter! What matters is we’re all family.”
“I won’t be with Aaron.” Rachel flatly declared.
“Rachel, don’t be ungrateful!” Vincent snapped. “Aaron’s family could make the whole Riverside City tremble! Who do you think you are to refuse him?”
Vincent’s patience ran out. Tearing off his disguise, he roared at Rachel, “Serve Aaron well, and we can talk. Otherwise, you… and your mother, get the hell back to where you came from! Don’t expect a single cent from me!”
Donna forgot all about pretending to be sick. Terrified, she grabbed Rachel’s hand, pleading desperately,
Rachel listened silently until Donna exhausted herself, then spoke calmly, “I happen to know some excellent divorce lawyers. I’ll send you their contacts later.”
She gave her stunned mother a faint smile, stood up, and walked straight out of the hospital room. The furious shouts, curses, and tearful excuses behind her meant nothing now.
Rachel headed for the airport, but as she started her car, someone suddenly dashed toward it.

Assuming it was an insurance scammer, she reached for her phone to call the police. But when the person looked up, Rachel froze in shock–it was Amy!
It had only been a year since they last met, but Amy looked much more haggard, completely unlike the dignified and elegant young lady of the Scott Family she used to be. Her hair was cut very short, she was emaciated with sunken cheeks, her skin was abnormally pale, and her dark circles were alarmingly large. Even though it was early summer, she was wrapped in a thick, dirty coat.
“Rachel, please save me!
Someone is after me!”
Amy also recognized Rachel and immediately started pounding on the car window nervously, constantly looking back at the garage entrance behind her.
Before Rachel could figure out what was happening, she saw several burly men running into the garage entrance, shouting aggressively, “Where is she?
Don’t let her get away!”
Rachel took another look at Amy, who was cowering in fear, took a deep breath, unlocked the car door, and Amy immediately got in. She frantically curled up into a ball, afraid that the men would see her.
“It should be safe here. You can go.”
Rachel parked the car across from the Police Station. As soon as she spoke, a sharp blade was pressed against her neck.
All the fear and timidity on Amy’s face was gone, replaced by the resentment and jealousy Rachel knew so well. “Don’t stop here. Keep driving.”
“Amy, do you know what you’re doing?”
Rachel hadn’t finished speaking when the blade sliced into her flesh, blood gushing instantly.
“I know perfectly well.”
She bared her teeth at Rachel’s reflection in the rearview mirror.

Rachel immediately noticed two missing teeth. Spotting Rachel’s gaze, Amy hastily clamped her hand over her mouth. “Don’t push your luck! Drive now!”
