“Aaron, let me go!”
Rachel tried to break free, but Aaron gripped her tighter.
“No!
I won’t ever let you go again!”
“Mr. Jones, please control yourself.”
Elijah stormed over, his expression stern. He yanked Aaron’s hand away, shielding Rachel behind him. His warning glare softened into tenderness when it landed on Rachel. “Rachel, should I call the police?”
“You’re… Rachel’s senior?”
Aaron narrowed his eyes threateningly at the man.
He remembered Elijah–the guy who used to orbit around Rachel constantly back then. Though never crossing any lines, Elijah’s gaze burned with unmistakable intensity whenever it rested on Rachel.
Even when he was still Alex, Aaron had despised his
presence.
“Stay away from Rachel. She’s mine.”
Aaron recalled privately warning Elijah once.
“You seem to be different from what Rachel described.”
Elijah had replied coolly, “Don’t worry, I won’t bother you two anymore. Not because ‘Rachel is yours,‘ but because ‘Rachel loves you.“”
“This is between Rachel and me. It’s none of your concern.
Aaron warned Elijah in a cold tone.

Though clearly disagreeing with her decision to be alone with Aaron, Elijah chose to respect Rachel’s judgment. “Call me anytime if you need anything.”
“Rachel, come home with me. I remember everything now.
Elijah’s departure made Aaron feel more confident about his chances.
“Congratulations.”
But Rachel’s reaction completely defied Aaron’s expectations.
“I won’t be going back with you. Even if you’ve remembered everything, you’re not Alex anymore.”
“You were right before–there never was an ‘Alex,‘ only ‘Aaron.“”
Her words struck Aaron like a knife to the heart. His face turned deathly pale while his eyes reddened instantly. His usually upright posture crumpled, shoulders slumping forward.
“Rachel, I… I never meant to forget you. I was ill, you know that.‘

“What I did… what I put you through… I’m truly sorry. Please give me another chance?”
“Let me spend the rest of my life making amends. I swear with my life, with everything the Jones family owns–I’ll never fail you again.”
Aaron stood there, humbled beyond recognition. Anyone who had known him before would have been stunned to see the head of the Jones family shed all dignity and pride, desperately seeking a chance at redemption from Rachel.
Yet Rachel’s response was unnervingly calm. “Aaron, do you know why I fell for Alex back then?”
Her words froze him. In his memory, their love had flowed as naturally as a river–he’d never questioned why Rachel chose Alex.
“Because Alex had a tender heart. Sensitive and kind, he’d secretly weep over others‘ suffering. Even when scraping by, he’d give his last penny to help someone. He’d eat nothing but dry bread for a month to save an injured stray…” Rachel’s gaze sharpened. “But Aaron isn’t like that. Born into privilege, aloof and untouchable. Her words tore through the thin veil Aaron had tried to drape over their shattered past. He wanted to pretend he hadn’t understood, yet found himself utterly transparent before her piercing honesty.
“…Alex was always part of Aaron, wasn’t he?”
Aaron weakly defended himself.
“It’s my fault. I fell for someone who never truly existed from the start.”
Rachel looked at Aaron with eyes swirling with apology, regret, reluctance–but nowhere could be seen the fierce devotion he had once cast aside like trash.
“Aaron, don’t force this anymore. Let’s stop forcing this.”
