Chapter 4
“W-What the hell is going on?”
He was so terrified he couldn’t speak and with the obstruction gone, I could now face my own
mangled corpse.
My head was severed, but my body remained stiff because it was locked in place, covered in maggots, with white, fat worms feeding on my flesh. The water’s surface was stained black and red with blood, creating an odd, complex hue.
On instinct, Oliver grabbed his assistant’s pant leg, smearing the filth from his hands onto him while roaring, “Who the hell planted this crap to scare me? Where’s that bitch Isabel? Did she rur away?”
“She wishes! Even if that bitch runs to the ends of the earth, I’ll find her!”
Though his voice sounded powerful, I could hear the trembling underneath.
He is scared!
No matter how calm he pretended to be, no matter how convincing he was, I had been his bedmate for so many years. How could I not hear the terror and fear in Oliver’s voice at that moment? He knew that was my body. He had killed me and our hard-to-get child.
The assistant whispered to him, “Sir, the lady… she’s really dead. The body has already decomposed.”
Oliver glared at the assistant with fury. “How much did Isabel pay you to play along with her? Do you think I’ll believe you two? Impossible, absolutely impossible!”
“Go find her, go check the surveillance footage! I want to see her alive or dead! I want Isabel to kneel before me and beg for forgiveness!”
He suddenly stood up and walked out, even going to the surveillance room himself, insisting on finding out how I had escaped.
Outside the door, Anne saw him leave and rushed forward to hug him. But the stench stopped her a few steps away, so she just coaxed softly, “Oliver, I baked your favorite bread. Want to try
some?”
Seeing his displeased expression, she pouted again to coax him, “Does my sister still refuse to apologize? It’s okay. As long as you’re happy, I’m fine with anything.”
But Oliver’s expression was strangely ice-cold.
“That slut is so bold, she actually ran away! But don’t worry, Anne, I said I’d make her apologize to you and Isabel will definitely not be able to escape.”
Hovering above him, I watched my husband gently comfort another woman, promising her he’d make me lower my head and confess I was wrong.
I thought, perhaps I truly don’t deserve his love.
The woman looked at him with eyes full of happiness, enduring the stench and smiled as she kissed Oliver’s face for the first time.
I instinctively averted my gaze, thinking, I’m really getting in the way of these two people’s happiness.
Actually, I had known about Anne’s existence all along.
