Her heart sank as she shot him a desperate look.
“I’m still super sick with this fever, and there’s like zero Ubers out here…”
Ryan didn’t even let her finish.
His voice went all sweet as he cooed into the phone: “Hey, don’t stress. I’m on my way right now.”
He ended the call and turned to Stella, his tone flipping to arctic. “Get out.”
Stella’s blood went cold.
t was almost dark, and they were stuck on some back road in the suburbs with no streetlights. And she was
till burning up with a 102 fever. How the hell was she supposed to get anywhere from here?
he tried to sound calm, “the hospital’s just a few miles away. Can you drop me off first, then go to Ivy?”
But Ryan just stared straight ahead and said it again: “Get out.”

tella sat there for a beat, then quietly opened the door and stepped onto the cracked asphalt.
he knew better than to push him. He’d done worse before.

tella pulled up her Uber app and waited. Ten minutes passed. Still nothing.
he rubbed her swollen eyes, feeling them burn.
I cold breeze hit her and she started shivering uncontrollably.
The empty road stretched out forever in both directions, dark as hell, with only her phone’s flashlight asting shadows on her face.
The unfairness of it all hit her like a truck. Stella’s nose started tingling and tears spilled down her cheeks.
Her tears splattered on the phone screen just as a call came through.
Professor Martinez’s warm voice filled her ear: “Stella, honey, have you thought about the study abroad program? We need to finalize everything in two weeks, and I have to submit the list tomorrow.”

Hearing that familiar, caring voice broke something inside her. The tears came harder now, streaming down
her face.
When the silence stretched too long, Professor Martinez spoke again: “Stella? If you’re not interested, I totally understand-”
“No.” Stella’s voice came out all choked up. “Professor Martinez, I want to do it.”
