Chapter 240

Valeria’s words were like a punch to Sebastian’s gut, and he felt as though he couldn’t breathe.

Although he had already guessed what had happened, he couldn’t help but have an emotional breakdown after hearing Valeria admit it out loud.

Sebastian’s voice was extremely hoarse as he asked, “What about Lenny? She’s my daughter,

isn’t she?”

The timeline and Selena’s age lined up perfectly, and it was impossible for Valeria to have given birth twice within a single year. Hence, the only viable conclusion was that Valeria had been pregnant with twins, and only the girl had survived.

Valeria did not speak, but tears had already gathered in her eyes. As she looked at Sebastian, her red and teary eyes were a silent answer to his question.

Sebastian carefully repeated, “Valeria, Lenny is my daughter, isn’t she?”

As Valeria nodded, tears streamed down her cheeks, falling onto her hand.

Sebastian gritted his teeth, and his cheeks burned as hot tears slipped down. He leaned helplessly against the car seat, his grip on the steering wheel so tight that his arm accidentally brushed the wiper lever.

Inside the quiet car, the lights illuminated their pale, tear-streaked faces.

As the wipers scraped against the glass, there was a loud screech-it sounded like an old gramophone, wailing and breaking.

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why?” Sebastian agonized.

“I called you that night. I had just woken up alone in the hospital ward. So I called you. But you seemed to be at a party, celebrating a classmate’s birthday.”

The roads were quiet, and only the sound of her light voice echoed throughout the car. “Ruby, happy birthday…”

Sebastian’s eyes widened as he froze in place, feeling as though he had just been struck by lightning. His mouth opened, but his throat felt parched, and no words came out.

He remembered that day.

After choosing to study abroad in Amaran, he had been placed in the same mentoring team as Ruby. In their dorms at Amaran, their classmates had decided to throw Ruby a birthday party.

His mentors and classmates were all there.

Although Sebastian disliked such gatherings, he had joined in since everyone was there. After drinking some alcohol, he sat in a chair by the window. He could see the moon outside from

his seat.

Suddenly, his phone rang. It was an unknown number, but it was from his home country.

After answering the call, there had only been silence from the other end. He had said hello twice before ending the call.

That was the only time he had ever attended Ruby’s birthday party.

Sebastian never thought it had been that very day.

How could it have been that day? He had answered her call, but…

“I…” Sebastian turned his head stiffly toward Valeria and looked into her teary eyes.

When he saw her pale and cold expression, his heart ached so badly that he couldn’t speak. He didn’t know what he was supposed to say.

He couldn’t possibly say he hadn’t known it was her, and he couldn’t question her for not telling him what had happened. Those words would have sounded ridiculous. Not to mention, Sebastian knew he had no right to blame or question her about anything.

He really wanted to apologize, but the words seemed stuck in his throat. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t utter them.

Valeria’s teary eyes were ice-cold as she calmly explained how she had lost their son.

Sebastian grabbed Valeria’s hand, but she gently shoved him away.

Then, with a trembling yet firm voice, she said, “Sebastian, Lenny is my daughter. Her name is Selena Neal, and she’s all I have left. I won’t let anyone take her away from me-over my dead body.”

At that moment, the scar on Valeria’s abdomen flashed across his mind. He remembered being jealous of it-jealous over the fact that she had given Shane a daughter.
