Chapter 234Â
“I didn’t lie to you,” Valeria answered as she pushed herself up with the help of the door. Placing her hand on the doorknob, Valeria twisted it, only to notice that the door wouldn’t budge.Â
Valeria couldn’t believe Sebastian hadn’t recognized her at all. The realization left her feeling relieved and devastated at the same time. Those conflicted feelings had haunted her for quiteÂ
some time.Â
“You were sitting there when I pushed open the consultation room.” When Valeria had first seen him back then, she had wanted to turn around and leave.Â
Valeria continued, “Sebastian, let’s just pretend that we’ve never met.”Â
They could just pretend that their recent brief encounters between them had never happened and that they had ended things half a year ago.Â
“Pretend we’ve never met…” Sebastian repeated the words under his breath before his emotions surged.Â
With a hoarse voice, he asked, “You must’ve been smug to see me grovel before you like a dog all this time. You have played me like a fool, so you’re probably ecstatic about that.”Â
Sebastian clenched his hands into fists as he bellowed, “You’re the one who left without aÂ
word after blocking my number and returning all of my stuff.Â
“Yet seven years later, you’ve decided to come back into my life again. Jane, you’re the one who messed up my world.Â
“You’re also the one who said you’ll leave Slate City, but it’s been half a year now, and you’re still standing before me. Jane, you’re the one who has never kept her word.”Â
Whether it was eight years ago, when Valeria ended things with him and blocked him without a word, or half a year ago, when she stood on the rooftop and told him she’d leave Slate City, ValerÃa had always been the one to walk away from their relationship.Â
Sebastian was trying his best to suppress the tremors in his voice as he hissed, “You claim I don’t know what love is, but Jane, have you ever once taken our relationship seriously? In our relationship, what did you take me for?”Â
Valeria had expected to run into him in the hospital, but she hadn’t expected him to find out that she was actually Jane.Â
His new discovery had placed a new question mark within the closed chapter between them.Â

Life was unpredictable, and Valeria would have never imagined that Margaret would fall gravely ill.Â
Since there was a door in between them, Valeria could not see Sebastian’s nod, nor the tears he was fighting to hold back. She also couldn’t see the tremors in his chest, and how close he was to an emotional breakdown.Â
Similarly, Sebastian also couldn’t see the tears that were streaming down Valeria’s cheeks as she spoke.Â
Valeria said, “I didn’t plan on coming to the Amstead Hospital, and you’re right. I was the one who had broken the balance between us. I should’ve never shown my face here.Â
“Once Granny finishes her surgery, I’ll take her back to her hometown for the follow-up chemotherapy. I won’t show my face to you again. No one will know that you had such a humiliating relationship before.”Â
“Well, aren’t you being considerate,” Sebastian let out a laugh that caused his chest to shake.Â
Every word that came out of Valeria’s mouth was something Sebastian did not want to hear. So, he said, “I’ve never once thought of our relationship as humiliating.”Â
Valeria fell silent for a long time before she asked, “Have you ever liked Jane before?”Â
Sebastian fell silent too. Those words were stuck in his throat, and he wasn’t able to say them out loud, nor could he swallow those words back down.Â
Back when he had realized he did like her, they had already broken up.Â
He tightened his grip around his key, causing the key to dig into his palm. After taking a deep breath, with trembling hands, he used the key to open the door.Â
The second the door was unlocked, light streamed into Valeria’s room, illuminating theÂ
woman’s face before him.Â
Valeria’s familiar face came into his sight, and her face gradually merged with Jane’s. That familiar feeling whenever he saw her was undeniable, and he had seen her face countless times in his dreams.Â
She had changed, yet somehow remained exactly the same.Â
Sebastian slowly reached out his hand, wanting to caress her cheek. However, Valeria had already taken a step toward the door, wanting to push his arm away and leave the room.Â
Unfortunately, his strong and firm body continued to barricade the entrance.Â

Sebastian’s emotions seemed to have returned to his usual calm self, but there was a dark glint in his eyes. He knew he couldn’t stop Valeria if she wanted to leave, but he really did not wantÂ
to move.Â
He just seemed calm on the outside, and he felt like there was a volcano erupting within him. He wondered how much Valeria hated him as she kept wanting to leave him again and again.Â
So, Sebastian asked, “Valeria, what about you then? Have you ever liked me before?”Â
“There’s no point in asking such questions now,” Valeria answered.Â
Sebastian asked again, “So, in the end, you just wanted to get your revenge on Gabriella. You felt like what happened to you was unfair, so you used it to threaten me to be my girlfriend. Doesn’t that mean your feelings toward me had never been pure since the start?”Â
