Chapter 224Â
Valeria held the phone, breathing quietly.Â
She listened as the noisy background on the other end faded into silence, then the man’s voice came through, hoarse yet clear.Â
“Valeria, it’s my birthday today.”Â
“Happy…” Valeria paused for a moment. After hearing from Martha about his past, she figured he probably didn’t want to hear the words “happy birthday”.Â
Instead, she said, “May your days be peaceful and your path smooth, with all things turning out well for you.”Â
“Come out and spend my birthday with me.”Â
Valeria was silent for a moment.Â
“Alright.”Â
With that, she got up, changed her clothes, and opened the door.Â
It was Valeria’s first time on the 68th floor of Grant Group, in downtown Slate City. It was the highest floor.Â
The night wind was strong, blowing her black hair into the air.Â
On the rooftop, Valeria walked forward. Sebastian was already there.Â
The wind tousled his short black hair into a mix of messiness and order. He wore a black overcoat, his shoulders and neck broad and straight. His entire figure carried a cold severity, almost blending into the dark background.Â
He flicked away the cigarette in his hand, snuffing it out. The red ember faded.Â
He inhaled the last trace of smoke escaping from the corner of his lips, then lifted his hand toward Valeria, his long fingers making a small beckoning motion.Â
The wind was too strong, scattering his words. Valeria could faintly make out his lips forming the words “come here”.Â
He was leaning against the glass railing at the edge.Â
She was only about 30 feet away from him.Â

Tucking back a few strands of hair blown across her cheek, she started walking toward him.Â
Suddenly, the night sky burst into light.Â
Fireworks bloomed instantly, lighting up the entire dark sky.Â
Valeria stopped in her tracks.Â
She stood still, looking up at the dazzling sparks spreading through the air. The smell of gunpowder was strong. She was very close to them.Â
It was the first time she had ever watched fireworks from such a close distance. The booming sound of the explosions seemed to echo right by her ears, each burst carrying a heat that madeÂ
her heart race.Â
From the 68th floor, the display of shimmering light was breathtaking.Â
She had only ever watched fireworks from the ground, tilting her head up.Â
Now, the bright light also illuminated Sebastian’s profile clearly.Â
He had been drinking. There was a faint flush on his cheeks. Up close, she could smell theÂ
alcohol.Â
Leaning lazily against the glass railing, Sebastian was pulled gently by Valeria, her hand gripping his coat. He leaned down naturally and embraced her.Â
“Isn’t it beautiful?” His lips brushed lightly against the edge of her ear.Â
She looked at the scene before her, blue fireworks lit up her view, stunningly beautiful. At theÂ
moment of their most brilliant bloom, they fell slowly like blue shooting stars.Â
She was amazed by the beauty.Â
She could also hear the sound of her own heartbeat.Â
“Caught up in the view?”Â
When Valeria still didn’t respond, Sebastian couldn’t resist reaching out to pinch her cheeks.Â
There wasn’t much softness to them.Â
Then, unexpectedly, Sebastian froze.Â
He stared at Valeria’s face, her eyes lit by the fireworks. Suddenly, something came to mind, making him frown.Â
Why was he thinking of Jane at this moment? Why was it that when he was pinching Valeria’sÂ

cheeks, Jane appeared in his mind?Â

Jane’s cheeks had more softness to them. He liked to pinch them and play with them before. But now, he was forcing himself to erase that name from his thoughts.Â
Their faces overlapped in an odd way.Â
Valeria came back to her senses. Her eyes were glowing under the light.Â
The wind on the rooftop was strong, yet Valeria didn’t feel cold. Sebastian held her, loweringÂ
his head to kiss her.Â
He asked her when her birthday was.Â
She softly replied, “It’s already passed.”Â
Sebastian remembered that her ID showed her birthday was at the turn of summer to autumn. That was when they had first met.Â
He held her tighter.Â
“I’ll celebrate it for you next year.”Â
The fireworks continued.Â
Valeria’s lips and tongue tingled from his kiss. She looked at Sebastian’s face as he took her hand, placing it around his waist so she would hold him.Â
Her hand slowly dropped, and she turned her face to the side.Â
Sebastian’s kiss missed.Â
