Potato had a dopey and silly look as it lay in the living room, searching for the ball. 

Pork Chop ran over and crouched by Valeria’s feet and barked once at Sebastian. It seemed like Pork Chop had sensed the quarrel between the two and was protecting its mistress. It stood in front of Valeria and faced Sebastian before letting out a bark. 

Every time Valeria replied to Sebastian calmly, it seemed to pierce straight into his heart. 

Sebastian’s chest burned with anger, but he had nowhere to let it out. So, he turned and left. 

His footsteps down the stairs were quick. Valeria stood at the door, feeling dazed for a moment. By the time she snapped back to reality, Sebastian had already disappeared. 

Valeria closed the door. 

Lowering her head, she petted Pork Chop. Then, she walked to the couch and bent down to pull out the chubby Potato, who had wedged himself beneath it. 

She pressed her lips together, feeling that the corner of her lips was torn and swollen. 

Valeria had no idea where Sebastian got so much energy from. She hadn’t even taken out the trash yet. Pulling on a mask, she carried the trash downstairs. 

When she returned upstairs, Shane opened his door on the fifth floor. 

He looked at her and asked, “Do you need my help?” 

Naturally, Shane was referring to Sebastian. 

Valeria shook her head. 

She knew old apartment buildings had poor sound insulation. Sebastian’s voice was low but seething with anger at the doorway. And when he left, his footsteps were heavy and quick 

The neighbors had definitely heard him. 

Valeria didn’t want to trouble Shane, since she had her own concerns. 

The Grant Group held absolute power in Slate City. 

Shane had just returned to the country. What if Shane was affected because Sebastian was angered by Valeria? She would feel guilty. 

Shane said, “Let’s have dinner together tomorrow night. My mom’s eyesight has improved, and she insists on cooking for Selena.”

“Alright.” Valeria nodded. Then, she went back upstairs. 

She tidied the paintbrushes that had been scattered across the living room table. 

A black sweater lay on the couch. 

Margaret had knitted it in her spare time as a gift for Shane. In Margaret’s eyes, Shane was her grandson–in–law. But in reality, he wasn’t. Valeria hadn’t given it to him, not because it wasn’t presentable, but because Valeria thought it was too precious. 

Giving something like that to a man seemed to cross some boundaries, so Valeria decided to keep it for herself. 

Men’s clothing was larger in size, so it was loose and comfortable. It was perfect for just lounging at home. 

In the bedroom, inside a shopping bag that had fallen near the window, she unzipped the garment dust cover. Inside lay a light blue cashmere coat. 

It wasn’t cheap by her standards, but it wasn’t outrageously expensive either. It had been bought in a mall, with a very casual, everyday style. 

Valeria stared at the coat. 

She suddenly remembered telling Sebastian that she had no occasion to wear the blue gown. It was too extravagant and luxurious, and not for her at all. 

But this one was different. She could wear it all winter. 

She knelt by the window, quietly looking at the coat spread across the floor. 

Moonlight spilled in through the gap in the curtains. 

His low voice echoed in her ears. “How do you know I don’t love you?” 

She was startled by his subtle changes. 

Little by little, he had been weaving himself into her daily life. This small home now had traces of Sebastian everywhere. 

She folded the coat carefully, thought for a moment, and then placed it inside her suitcase. 

On the night of the third day of the year, Valeria and Selena went to Lucy’s home. The fragrance of dishes being cooked came from the kitchen.
