Chapter 5
The moment the parrot said that, Gabriel, Marvin, and Georgia lit up with joy.
Marvin’s and Georgia’s eyes welled with tears, their smiles so wide that they could barely contain them. “This is wonderful! Finally, the baby can be born. The Buckner family will finally have an heir!”
My parents and Thomas let out a visible sigh of relief.
As for me, my expression remained calm. This was exactly what I’d longed to hear, but now that the words had been spoken, my heart felt completely still.
Gabriel mistook my silence as a sign that I was too overwhelmed to react. He rushed over, wrapped me in his arms, and whispered excitedly in my car, “Honey, did you hear that? We can keep this baby! We’re finally going to have a child of our own!”
I felt numb, but I still smiled faintly. “Yes… Our wish finally came true.”
From that moment on, I was treated like a rare and precious treasure.
Georgia bought the best Manuka honey she could find and prepared it for me every single day, smiling as she caressed my belly. “Finally, this little one has come to us. I’ve been waiting and waiting, and at last, the day is here.”
Marvin took it even further. Before the baby was even born, he’d already chosen a name-Nova Buckner.
He was certain it would be a boy, destined to shine as brightly as the star.
Not only that, but he also went as far as designating the baby as the heir to the company, even scheduling the official transfer ceremony for when I reached five months.
He pulled me aside, his words carrying the weight of a solemn oath. “Evelyn, your only duty now is to bring this child into the world safely. Georgia and I will never let you suffer.”
His words rang with conviction.
However, I didn’t register a single one of them.
What I really wanted to ask was whether they ever mourned the three babies they forced me to abort or if they honestly believed they’d never wronged me. But the words died in my throat.
There was no reason to ask those questions anymore.
During my pregnancy, life became one of complete ease and dependence. I didn’t need to lift a finger; everything was taken care
of for me.
As the baby grew, my morning sickness worsened. Every single smell made me sick.
Distressed, Gabriel moved me to a quiet house by the seaside. Thinking of the child, Marvin and Georgia agreed without
hesitation.
As time passed, Gabriel grew busier and rarely came home. And I grew increasingly uneasy, consumed with worry about the baby.
Then, when I was five months along, the call finally came.
“We found them,” the person on the other end of the line said.
Tears streamed down my face as laughter spilled from my lips. Only I knew how long I’d been waiting for those words.
The very next day, Marvin held the long-anticipated shareholder meeting. He and Georgia stood proudly on stage, smiles spread across their faces.
Meanwhile, Gabriel sat among the audience, his head lowered and his expression hidden from sight.

Marvin held up the agreement and declared, “I hereby announce that Buckner Group will be inherited by my grandson, Nova Buckner-”
As Marvin and Georgia eagerly looked at me, I walked in slowly. The moment everyone saw me, the hall went silent.
Marvin and Georgia looked at me as if they’d just seen a ghost. “Evelyn… W- Where’s the baby?”
I touched my flat stomach, pulled out a medical certificate, and said lightly, “I had an abortion.”
