10 Chapter 10
10 Chapter 10
Seeing that he wouldn’t be reasoned with, Salvatore’s fist connected sharply with Rocco’s
jaw.
Rocco stood on the other side, pounding on the door. He was covered in blood, a fresh gunshot wound gaping in his leg.
“Come back. I’ll make it up to you. Please, forgive me. Just one more chance.”
The only thing left in my eyes when I looked at Rocco was hatred.
It also shut out our past.
“Now that you know the truth, you should be too ashamed to ever show your face to her
again.”
He had only ever thought of his own pain, stubbornly clinging to my perceived “betrayal.”
Perhaps this was the best ending after all.
“Lucia, I know I was wrong. I truly know.”
A long time later, at a Corleone family dinner, Salvatore and I attended in our finest.
Seeing me, Salvatore immediately moved to my side, shielding me protectively.
“Rocco, don’t come near me again. It will only make me hate you more.”
Rocco paid him no mind, shouting into the apartment.
He never imagined that from beginning to end, he was the one who was wrong.
“You don’t know the truth.”
My recently calmed nerves frayed instantly.
He begged me over and over again.
“And you certainly don’t know that the night my parents died, the night our child died, was our engagement anniversary.”
“Did
you
think our war these past four years was just a game?”
Rocco barely seemed to feel it, just repeating my name over and over again.
But my next words froze him in place.
That door shut out his remorse and his regret.

Rocco fell to his knees.
But I just looked at him and said, “Every breath you take is a monument to what I’ve lost.
The greatest mercy I can offer is to let you live and remember it all.”
He owed me. His entire family owed me.
“Where’s Lucia? I need to see her.‘
“Lucia, I know what happened four years ago. It was my fault. I was wrong.”
After that night, Rocco Corleone was never seen again.
He didn’t stop, even after Salvatore had beaten him black and blue.
The moment the door opened, Rocco tried to push past him.
Salvatore glanced at me, his voice a low reassurance.
Salvatore’s jaw tightened, but I placed a hand on his arm, signaling that I had this.
“Don’t be afraid. I’ll handle this.”
When Rocco saw me in Salvatore’s arms, a fresh wave of pain crossed his face.
“Rocco, tell me… do you deserve it?”
Rocco was shattered by my every question.
“All my pain was your creation. And you want me to come back to you?”
He knew he had wronged me, but he never knew the depth of the wounds he’d inflicted.
The seats that had once belonged to Rocco’s family were empty.
Just as Salvatore was about to land another blow, my voice stopped him.
“You don’t know what it was like to come back to you, covered in scars, only to find you
with her.”
I knelt down and whispered in his ear.
Salvatore and I looked at each other, our worlds contained in that single glance.
“Lucia, come out! I know I was wrong! Please, come out!”
They had been purged, their name erased from the family records.
The arrogant man from the hospital was gone, replaced by a desperate, pleading shell.
I cried in Salvatore’s arms, letting go of all the pain I had held for so long.

Salvatore blocked his path.
The heavy door closed, leaving Rocco wailing in the hallway.
As I approached, Rocco’s eyes lit with a flicker of hope.
“Lucia, give me another chance. You know I love you. Come back to me. Let’s start over.”
“You don’t know the most humiliating, most hidden details of that night.”
