Chapter 17 Where’s Rosalie’s Birth Certificate?
Camelia’s smile slipped for a beat. She turned to the young engineer and softened her tone. “Don’t panic. Take me to the server room. I’m not as familiar with the Firmament System as Rosalie, but I’ll do my best.”
William waved Rosalie toward the president’s office.
He let out a heavy sigh and put on his benevolent father act. “Rosalie, I know this feels unfair, but the
company isn’t run by one person.
“The board is putting pressure on me. For the past six months, your focus hasn’t been on the work. That
much is true.”
He lifted his cup, blew across the rim, and added, “You know I’m on your side, but my hands are tied.”
Rosalie kept her eyes down, a cold smile tugging at her lips, and said nothing.
Seeing that she was unmoved, William shifted to a patient, earnest tone. “Here’s what we can do. There’s a smaller home-tech subsidiary under Stellar Group called Vertex Tech. Go there as the director and take charge of it. How does that sound?”
“It’s a lighter load. Think of it as a breather. No matter what you choose to do there, I’ll support you.”
Rosalie’s heart sank.
Vertex Tech had bled money for years and sat on the chopping block.
Pulling her off Stellar Group’s core tech track to babysit a failing subsidiary while Camelia slid into her chair counted as help?
Rosalie looked up as if idly curious. “Dad, you really do take good care of Camelia. If I didn’t know better, I’d think she is your daughter.”
“Watch your mouth!” William slapped the desk, his face darkening. “You’re getting out of line! Don’t talk
nonsense!”
He jabbed a finger toward the door. “I’ll have HR issue the transfer right now. You report to Vertex Tech immediately!”
Rosalie smiled, but it never reached her eyes. “Did you forget Grandpa’s will? Stellar Group will be mine sooner or later.”
William narrowed his eyes and snorted. “The will only takes effect once you’re married. As long as you aren’t, Stellar Group stays under my control and you follow my lead!”
The pieces clicked. No wonder Lucian broke the engagement, and William didn’t lift a finger to stop it. He had been counting on that clause.
But he would be disappointed.

Rosalie smiled and looked at William meaningfully. “Dad, you’re that sure I’m not married? What if I already am?”

William chuckled. “Don’t joke. I know how high your standards are. Since you were a kid, you only ever cared for Lucian. No other man ever measured up. He turned you down, and you expect me to believe you
just married someone else?”
Her smile only deepened. “I’ll report to Vertex Tech,” she said, pausing a beat. “But I will attend this month’s board meeting.”
With that, she left without waiting for his reaction.
A prickle of unease crawled up William’s spine. Something about Rosalie felt different.
William pulled out his phone and called Abigail. “Abigail, where’s Rosalie’s birth certificate?”
There was a brief pause on the line. “In the study safe. Why?”
“There is no why. I need it for something. I’ll have Paul swing by and pick it up.” William kept his tone even while plotting in his head. If he held the birth certificate, Rosalie wouldn’t be able to marry in secret.
On the other end, Abigail frowned. She thought for a moment, then dialed Rosalie.
“Rosa, your dad just asked me for your birth certificate and said he’s sending Paul to get it. It looks like you called it.”
