Chapter 12 I’ve Received The Gift

Rosalie’s lashes trembled, but she said nothing.

Hilda lifted a pair of ruby drops from the tray.

“And these,” she murmured, “you stayed up all night finishing an Al demo for Mr. Fenwick and worked

yourself sick. He sat by your bed for days.

“He bid on these earrings to cheer you up. He said they were the fire you burned for him, and the promise

his love would never burn out.”

Rosalie’s fingertips curled.

Piece by piece, Hilda recalled the sweet memories behind every jewel. Each had once carried a rush of

tenderness, a vow, a future she had believed would last a lifetime.

Hearing it now felt like a set of sugar-coated blades, each one sliding sharply into her chest.

Her eyes stung red. She couldn’t make sense of it.

Lucian, who used to fuss over her cramps, would clatter around the kitchen making her hot tea with

honey and run out at midnight to buy a heating pad.

How had that same man spent the next seven years turning ruthless toward her? How could he stand by

while she went under the cold operating lights again and again?

Rosalie closed her eyes. When she opened them, the sparkle was gone, replaced by cold ice.

“It’s over, Hilda,” she said, cutting Hilda off.

Hilda’s face was all worry and confusion. She still couldn’t accept that two people who had loved so

deeply could come to this.

“Ms. Ashford, what if there’s a misunderstanding? Maybe you should ask Mr. Fenwick and hear him out.”

If not for the second chance she had been given, Rosalie might have believed that, too.

She might have gone to Lucian in tears, begged him not to leave, and picked herself apart to find where

she had failed.

But there was no misunderstanding. There had been seven years of calculation, a lie so big she had paid for it with her youth and her health.

Even if he had some reason she never knew, so what? The damage was done. The trust was gone.

The moment he secretly had her take those pills, it was over. Any further explanation would only add insult to injury.

Her voice came out husky but steady. “Clear it all. Not a single piece stays.”

Hilda opened her mouth, then closed it and nodded. “Yes, Ms. Ashford.”

She sighed and began to pack.

Rosalie didn’t look back. She stepped out to the terrace.

The summer breeze cooled her cheeks and cleared the fog in her head.

Leaning against the railing, she watched the city’s neon lights pulse in the distance and felt as if she had forgotten something important.

Just then, her phone buzzed. The caller ID flashed “Honey,” and her heart skipped a beat.

Oh no! She had forgotten to cancel the wedding surprise.

She picked up the phone, and a low voice came through the line. “I’ve received the gift.”

Her grip tightened around the phone.

She had spent six months designing an Al home-assistant core chip and hid it inside a collectible figure of his favorite character, so it could hold simple, playful conversations.

It was all her time and care, poured into a one-of-a-kind wedding gift.

In the previous life, he had been giddy when he opened it. He had scooped her up and spun her around

the room.

But now…
