Chapter 10

Now that he was finally locked up in prison, he actually felt relieved, as if his punishment had come, and I would no longer haunt him.

“Emmy, I’m sorry. I broke my promise and failed to protect you.”

“Do you remember I once said I would marry you?”

He placed fresh flowers and roses in front of my grave.

He brought a wedding dress, insisting on sharing a wedding toast with me.

He even bought a strawberry cake-my favorite-calling it our wedding cake.

But just as he lit the candles, a gust of wind blew them out.

Daniel tried several more times, but the flames were extinguished again and again.

The light in his eyes dimmed.

‘Emmy, is it that you don’t want to marry me anymore?”

Only the sound of the wind answered-no voice, no response.

Daniel gave a bitter laugh at himself.

‘It’s fine. You must still be angry with me. Once I join you down below, I’ll make it up to you here.”

He ate the entire cake by himself.

He never liked sweets; the one who loved them had been me.

When he was finished, Daniel pulled out a fruit knife and slashed his wrist three times.

But his face was smiling.

‘Emmy, I’m here to atone.”

He lay down in front of my grave.

But a passing ambulance took him away-he didn’t die.

Afterward, he tried several more times-jumping off buildings, staging car crashes…

n the end, he was left half-paralyzed, but still alive.

A broken man, trapped in despair.

‘Emmy, is it that you won’t forgive me, that you don’t want to see me anymore?”

Tears streamed down his face, but I hovered nearby, waving at him.

‘Daniel, we will never meet again.”

When the truth came out, my birth parents finally learned it was Chloe Miller who had murdered

At last, regret consumed them.

“We never imagined that after raising her all these years, we had been feeding a viper who killed our own daughter.”

“What kind of sin have we committed?”

They knelt at my grave, begging forgiveness.

“Emmy, we were blinded. That wretched Chloe deceived us.”

“You were our real daughter, and we were the cruel ones. We are the ones most deserving of

death!”

It was said that, overcome with guilt, they went mad that day and hurled themselves against my tombstone, dying instantly.

But even with such a dramatic death to show remorse, I could not forgive them.

The bond of parent and child had ended in this lifetime, and I no longer wished for any tie in

another.

As for Daniel-

In the next life, too, let us never meet again.
