At this moment, sitting on the floor, I kept recalling things. 

Suddenly, I lifted my head and finally grasped the thread of understanding amidst all the things that 

felt wrong. 

What friend’s travel agency? It was clearly a scheme he had set up, intending to send my travel–loving parents to the Northwest, where his accomplices would then lure them into the restricted wilderness zone.

Thinking this, I stood up and knocked on his bedroom door. 

“Come out. I want a divorce.” 

The door opened. Cole looked at me, shocked: “Are you crazy? For the sake of two old fools, you want to waste that much money? I won’t give you the money, so now you’re thinking about divorce?” 

I nodded: “Divorce. Divide the assets. The down payment for this house was paid by my parents. The mortgage was paid jointly by us. The renovations and appliances were paid for by your family. So, we’ll split the current market value fifty–fifty. The house goes to you; the money comes to me.” 

“Our joint assets will be split equally. Don’t worry; we had a prenuptial agreement for pre–marital property; nothing is mixed together.” 

“The cars? One each.” 

At this moment, I felt even more relieved that recently I had considered trying to conceive. I had even asked experienced colleagues at work, bought folic acid and other prenatal supplements, and downloaded an app to calculate ovulation days.

But these were only preparations. I was just about to start trying when some things came up and delayed me. I had even considered never having children at all. 

With no children, dividing the property would be very easy. 

Seeing me so resolute, Cole sneered: “You think threatening me with divorce will make me willing to pay that money? Riley Thompson, stop dreaming. Your money is also mine. Don’t even think about getting a divorce.” 

I looked at him in disbelief. It was hard to imagine that the man who used to appear every day below my dorm building, who knelt on one knee proposing, promising to be good to me forever, had 

now become like this. 

“Do you really want Mom and Dad to die that badly?” I struggled to steady my breathing, looking at him coldly. 

He sighed: “Riley, I know your parents raised you all these years and it wasn’t easy, but you also have to think about our future. We are both only children. We already have to support four elderly parents. Then, if we have two children later, can we afford it?” 

I said firmly: “My parents have pension funds; their retirement isn’t a worry.” 

He looked at me coldly, his eyes actually revealing dissatisfaction directed at me. 

“But now, we need to spend a hundred thousand dollars just for one rescue attempt! And maybe 

they can’t even be rescued! That hundred thousand would be wasted! With our salaries, how many years would it take us to save up that hundred thousand dollars again?” 

Hearing this, I felt nothing but disgust. Perhaps it was psychological, but my body reacted. I covered 

my stomach and retched dryly. 

Seeing my action, Cole’s eyes suddenly lit up with joy: “Since you are pregnant, if you won’t consider 

us two, at least consider our child, right?” 

Pregnant? How could I possibly be pregnant?
