Chapter 2
Stella’s face flushed.
“E–Evelyn! How could you say that? We live together! We’re practically family!”
“Fine! If that’s how you want to be, then nobody uses the elevators!”
“Let’s see who’s okay with getting their pay docked for being late!”
She smirked at the crowd of anxious employees.
They were already cutting it close.
Panicked, they started running for the stairs–all thirty flights.
Seeing them obey her, Stella puffed out her chest.
“Still want to stand here, Evelyn?”
Biting back my anger, I stepped into the empty elevator, swiped my key card, and hit the button for
floor 58–the executive level.
Stella’s eyes lit up.
She snatched the card out of my hand.
“Ooh, fancy! Swipe access? I’ll hold onto this. It’ll make it easier for me to visit next time.”
I just stared at her.
“That’s a senior executive card! Why would you need to come back?”
She stuffed it into her purse.
“I’ve only been here half an hour, and I’ve already spotted tons of problems. Clearly, this place needs
my constant supervision!”
“You should be learning from me, Evelyn. As the Kael heiress, you need to know this stuff!”
I almost laughed out loud. What planet was she on?

What the hell did Kael Corporation’s management have to do with her?
We’d been roommates for just a week–did she seriously think the Kaels were her birthright?
Before 1 could say anything, the doors opened, revealing several of my dad’s board members.
“Evelyn! What a surprise!” One of them, Desmond, beamed. “Your dad told us you got into a top
university! Smart, just like him!”
“Thanks, Desmond,” I smiled.
“Just trying to escape the campus heat and showing my roommate around.”
Before he could reply, Stella barged past me, a frown on her face.
“Desmond! Why are you just standing around by the elevators? Slacking off?”
“I’m reporting you to Mr. Kael! A bunch of useless freeloaders, the lot of you!”
Desmond’s jaw dropped.
“Who… who is this?”
Oh, for God’s sake. I patted his shoulder.
“Just ignore her, she’s my classm-”
SMACK!
Stella had slapped me. Hard.
Across the face. Her eyes burned with contempt.
“Evelyn! What did your father tell you at orientation? He told you to listen to me! Is this how you
treat me?”
“You disrespect me one more time, and you’re out of here too!”
