Chapter 40
Adams was just leaving home when his phone rang, he paused and fetched his phone from his pocket.
“Mike.” He muttered, sighed before answering the call.
“Hello Mike.”
“Hey Adams, are you at work already?”
“I was just leaving, anything wrong?”
“Err… I’m currently at the station.”

“What!?” Adams blurted out. “What happened? What are you doing there? Are you alright?” He questioned in one breath.
“I’m fine Adams, it’s just… remember the men who attacked me before?” Mike asked. Adams frowned.
“Yes I do, what about them? Don’t tell me they came at you again.” Adams said, already sounding pissed.
“I don’t know if it was them but when I left your house yesterday, I noticed a car was following me, I couldn’t go home and so I had to come to the station, they followed me down here too, but left when they saw I wasn’t going to leave the station. I already reported the case and I also spent the night here, a police officer has been assigned to be with me 24/7, hopefully we’ll be able to catch those men, I was also advised to get a bodyguard.”
“Remember I asked you to get a body guard before, but you wouldn’t listen, I’ll come right over and I don’t care what you say, I’m getting someone to guard you at all times until this issue is resolved.”
“You don’t have to bother about coming over Adams, I’m fine, just go to work and I’ll meet you there, you’ve got some meetings you need to attend to today remember.”
Adams sighed deeply, then he rubbed his temples. “Are you sure?”
“Of course I am, and beside a police officer will be assigned to me soon, then I can leave.”
“Alright then, just keep me posted if anything happens, and do take care of yourself Mike, I don’t want you dying, you still owe
me a lot.”
Mike scoffed. “You could have just said I should take care of myself Adams, no need to act tough.” Mike chuckled.
“Get out, I’m hanging up now.” He didn’t give Mike the chance to say anything else before disconnecting the call.
“Who the hell could be behind this attacks?” Adams muttered with a thoughtful look on his face.
He shook his head as he couldn’t think of anyone at all, his driver already had the car door open for him, he hurriedly got in, when the driver was sure that he was comfortable, he also got in and drove off.

Alicia was in her room doing her makeup since she needs to leave the house as soon as possible.
A knock came on her door, followed by May’s voice. “Alicia, can I come in?”
“Sure May.” She yelled, not taking her eyes away from the mirror.
May walked in and smiled when she saw what Alicia was doing. “You seem to have gotten better at doing your own makeup.”
“What do you expect? I can’t have you do it all the time for me.” Alicia said with a little laugh.
“I won’t be going to work today, so you don’t have to bother about taking Diane to school, I can do that for you.” May said. Alicia sharply turned around to look at her.

“Why? What’s wrong?”
May went to sit on her bed. “I woke up not feeling so well and so I took a day off, I already called the company and I was granted permission to take the day off.”
Alicia dropped her foundation on the table, stood up and walked to where May was seated, she placed her palm on May’s forehead to check her temperature, truly she was a bit hot.
“I think you should visit the hospital and get properly checked and treated.”
“There’s no need for that Alicia, it’s just a little fever, I’ll be fine when I take some drugs and get enough rest.”
Alicia rolled her eyes at her. “You’re really not getting me May, you can’t just-”
“Please Alicia, trust me I’m fine.” May said weakly.
Alicia looked at her for sometime, she wouldn’t want to tire her out by getting into an argument with her. “Fine, if you say so.” Alicia said in surrender. “But if you don’t get better by tomorrow, we’re going to the hospital, and you don’t need to take Diane to school, just stay at home and get enough rest.”
“It’s not a bother, I can do it, I’m strong enough to do that at least, and you need to hurry off to work by the way.” May replied.
“Don’t argue with me and just do as I say.” Alicia said, a note of finality in her voice.
May sighed, then she rolled her eyes at Alicia, she knew it was pointless trying to argue with Alicia, so she gave up. “If you say so
Ma’am.”
After a brief moment of silence, May decides to tell Alicia about her discussion with Adams, she doesn’t even know if she should call it a discussion.
“Uhm… Yesterday, Adams called me to his office.”
“What? Why?” Alicia frowned.
“He wanted me to help him get back with you, but trust me babes, I gave him a piece of my mind not minding if he was my boss, I couldn’t give a shit about that after hearing what he said.” May hissed loudly. “I made it clear to him that he can fire me if he wants to, but I’m never helping him get back with you or gain your forgiveness, not after what he did. Thinking about it is making my blood boil with rage.”
“What the hell is wrong with that man!” Alicia spat. “And May, I do appreciate you for standing up for me, but please, I wouldn’t want you to loose your job because of me.”
“Oh come on, I can always get a new one, you have no idea how much you mean to me Alicia, I don’t mind giving up my job for you, I’m willing to do more than that if needed.”
“I know and I sincerely appreciate you for everything May, but please for my sake, don’t try to give up your job for me, never be at peace with myself if something like that was to ever happen.”
“For your sake I’m going to say yes, but I’m still sticking to my own decision.” May winked.
“You’re crazy.” Alicia chuckled.
“Just go get ready quickly, I already took care of Diane, I’ll go check up on her now.” May stood up from the bed.
“Thank you so much May.” Alicia replied, feeling extremely grateful.
“She’s my daughter too, so there’s no need to say thanks.” May winked, then she left.
I would
After May left, what she said about Adams rang in Alicia’s head once more and she whispered. “Please Adams, please stop trying so hard.”
