Chapter 38
On her way back to her department, May bumped into Mike.
“Hey.” He held her shoulders. “Are you alright?” He asked, his voice laced with concern.
May stepped back a bit. “I’m fine, and I’m sorry, I wasn’t focused on where I was headed.”
“It’s fine.” Mike replied, but he didn’t fail to notice how upset she looked. “If you don’t mind me asking, is everything alright, you clearly don’t look happy to me, in fact you look so pissed and like you want to hit someone.”
May scoffed. “Then I guess you should go see your best friend, then you’ll know why.” She replied before walking away,
“Exc…” Mike trailed since he doubts she’ll even listen to him at this moment. A confused frown appeared on his face. “What have you done this time Adams?” He groaned in frustration.
He wasted no time in going to Adams office, when he arrived, he knocked on the door but got no response, he tried again but still nothing.
“Fuck this!” He spat then he opened the door, the first thing his eyes caught was the broken vase on the floor, then he looked at Adams who was standing at his window side, his back was turned to him but because of the smell of cigarette which hung in the air, he knew he was smoking.
Mike rushed to him. “What the hell are you doing man!? I thought you’ve quit smoking, why the hell are you smoking again!” He helf yelled.
Adams paid no attention to him, he didn’t even act like there was someone else in the office with him, he only kept on smoking and blankly staring into space.
“Adams!” Mike called loudly. “Come on man don’t try to ignore me and act like I’m invisible or something, tell me what’s wrong, if whatever happened is enough to make you smoke again, then it must be really serious.” Mike said, but still Adams paid no attention to him.
He angrily dragged the cigarette from Adams and went to throw it in the trash can, only when he did that did Adams pay him some attention, but from the look on his face, you could tell he was pissed and obviously didn’t like what Mike just did.
“You should know your limits Mike!” He raged.
“Are you going to tell me what happened now? I literally saw May leaving and she was looking so angry, she asked me to come to you and your expression is no different from hers, and what’s with the broken vase!?”
“It’s none of your business, just leave and let me smoke in peace, this is helping me cool down.” He brought out a full pack of cigarettes from his pocket, but before he could even take one out of it, Mike grabbed the packet from him, then he went back to the trash can and emptied everything into the trash.
“Mike!!” Adams called furiously.
“I don’t care if you get mad at me Adams, you can do whatever you want to me, hit me if you want but I’m not letting you go back to smoking. I know how hard Alicia tried to get you to quit and ever since, you haven’t gone back to smoking until today, are you just going to throw away the promise you made to her and go back to your old habits?”
“You really don’t understand Mike, I’m so frustrated and confused right now, the only thing I need is a bottle of whiskey and that damn cigarette!” Adams annoyingly replied.
“You’ve never kept anything from me, if I say myself, I literally know every single damn thing about you, I know about everything going on in your life and that’s because we share a strong bond, calling you my best friend is an understatement Adams, you’re my brother, we’re brothers and brothers should stick to each other and try to help each other isn’t it?”
“Just tell me what’s wrong and I promise to do my best to help you like I’ve always done, you never keep things from me Adams,

and I’m sure you’re not going to start now.”
Adams ruffled his hair in frustration. “Everything is just so fucking messed up Mike!” He complained bitterly. “I’ll never ever be able to forgive myself for letting go of Alicia, I shouldn’t have divorced her in the first place Mike, I really shouldn’t, but then I guess this is what I get for being so stupid! For listening to what other people say rather than follow my heart. I’m an idiot Mike, I’m a complete idiot!” He slapped himself hard across the face.
Just one slap wasn’t even enough, he was in so much pain that he wanted to do more than just hit himself as a punishment for his stupidity. He was about hitting himself again, but Mike rushed to him and held his hand so tight, trying to stop him from hurting himself even further.
“Get a hold of yourself Adams! Hurting yourself like this won’t solve anything.” Mike cautioned, still struggling to hold Adams in place.
“You don’t understand Mike, you should have been here to hear what May said to me, you should have been here to listen to the words she said to me, I can’t help but feel so guilty Mike, I just can’t help it! She even said Diane wasn’t mine, she said she wasn’t mine.” A lone tear slipped down Adams cheek.
He looks so broken and frustrated that it was hurting Mike pretty badly, for the years he’s known Adams, he’s always known him to be strong, it’s not so easy to get him to break down like this, and seeing his strong friend this way was equally killing him and he could feel every bit of his pain.
He instantly hugged him tightly, patting his back in a comforting manner.
“It’s going to be alright Adams, it’s all going to be alright, trust me.” He said softly.
For quite a great deal of time, all Mike did was tried his best to comfort Adams, he couldn’t leave his side knowing he needs someone so bad.
He then whispered once more. “It’s all going to be alright.”
