Echoes Novel 11

Three days isn’t a long time. But it felt longer than the past seven years.

Stefan silently watched Mindy work, live, and visit friends. He finally learned that Mindy really did love swee- ts. That she loved to joke with people. That when she was happy, her eyes would curve into crescent moons.

She would rescue stray cats and dogs on the street, buy meals for the homeless, and when she was wrong- ed, she would argue her case with a sharp wit that left her opponents speechless.

He had thought Mindy was a cat without claws. Now, he realized how wrong he had been. Mindy was a

living, breathing person. She had her own joys and sorrows. She would be disappointed when rejected, sad when stood up. The person she should love was someone like Shaun Ashton, who gave as much as he rece- ived. Not a monster who stripped her of her dignity.

The more Stefan watched, the more silent he became. At first, he could manage a few words with her. By the

end, he couldn’t speak at all.

He had crossed through time and space to this unfamiliar world, only to be confronted with a mirror.

And in that mirror, he saw a piece of rotting flesh.

Midnight was approaching. Mindy walked ahead of him down a tree-lined path.

Perhaps he was about to die. The life that had flashed before his eyes when he jumped from the bridge now came rushing back. Seven years flew by. The shadow of his memories finally settled on the figure walking in

front of him.

Stefan heard a distant bell toll. He stopped.

Mindy seemed to sense something and stopped as well.

Stefan asked the question he needed to ask most. “The day you left… did it hurt?”

Mindy didn’t turn around. Her voice was very soft. “Yes. He stabbed me three times. Thanks to you, it really… did hurt quite a lot.”

The wind blew in from the distance, howling past them.

Stefan couldn’t cry. He just felt like he was dying.

“I don’t deserve to be forgiven.” Stefan fell to his knees. “Mindy, make a gravestone for me. In the next life, I

want to live in your world.”

His plea was met with silence.

Under the night sky, a mechanical, electronic voice sounded.

“System upgrade complete. Bug has been fixed.”

“Transmitting outsider. Countdown: 3-2-”

Mindy didn’t turn around. She didn’t wait to hear the rest of his words. She didn’t even wait for the System to finish. She just paused for a few seconds, then continued walking forward.
