Chapter 9
After the events of the previous day, Kayce Campbell hadn’t come looking for Alexandra Morris again.
According to his friend, after leaving Alexandra, Kayce went straight to Chelsea Knight’s place, where they had a heated argument.
Kayce slapped Chelsea and kicked her to the floor, yelling furiously:
“This is all your fault! If it weren’t for your dumb idea, Alexandra never would have found out about us!”
“Now look! Alexandra’s divorced me, and I’m left with nothing! Not a single cent!”
“I was supposed to have it all from the Morris Corporation! Now I’ve got zip!”
Kayce took out all his anger on Chelsea.
Chelsea started crying, begging Kayce to let her go.
Kayce continued for a while, and only when he was too worn out did he finally let Chelsea be.
He slumped onto the couch, lifted Chelsea’s chin with his hand, and commanded:
“You’ve messed things up for me, so from now on, you’re going to support me.”
Terrified, Chelsea could only nod through her tears.
Hearing about all this, Alexandra just shook her head.
Kayce was naturally someone who preyed on others. Having tasted the high life Alexandra had introduced him to, he might never be able to return to a humble lifestyle.
Now, Chelsea would have to face the fallout of her actions. It seemed like poetic justice for her mistakes.
A few days later, Alexandra’s father, Bruno Morris, invited her over for dinner.
He said that her divorce was the right decision and, as a reward, he had found her a potential match for an arranged meeting.
Alexandra sighed inwardly, wondering if her father was ever going to let her live in peace.
Sitting at the dinner table, exchanging awkward glances with Oakley Morris, Alexandra realized that the match her father had mentioned was him.
She felt a bit embarrassed and unsure of how to explain this to her father.
After all, Oakley, a prominent figure in their social circle, could have any woman he wanted. Why would he choose her, a divorced
woman?
Bruno seemed determined to pair the two of them together; halfway through dinner, he made an excuse to leave, creating an opportunity for Alexandra and Oakley to be alone.
“Ha! My dad always jumps the gun, don’t take it seriously,” Alexandra joked.
Oakley gazed deeply into her eyes and replied in a low voice:
“But… I am.”
Hearing this, Alexandra looked up in surprise, meeting a gaze as deep as the ocean.
In that moment, she was sure, beyond any doubt, that Oakley liked her.
Surprised, she asked, “You like me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“It’s a secret.”
That secret didn’t stay hidden for long.
It turned out that he had been interested in her for quite a while.
During a guest lecture at her university, when he saw her smiling in the front row, he was already captivated.
During a guest lecture at her university, when he saw her smiling in the front row, he was already captivated.
Afterwards, he tried to reach out to her, hoping to get to know her.
However, upon learning she already had a boyfriend, he kept his feelings under wraps all this time.
It was only when he accidentally discovered Kayce and Chelsea’s shenanigans that a glimmer of hope returned.
Knowing all this, Alexandra felt that her image of Oakley as distant and unreachable had completely shattered.
It was like pulling a serene, ethereal gentleman into the everyday world, and she felt a pang of guilt.
He often joked that if she hadn’t divorced soon, he would have handed her the evidence himself and swept her off her feet. In response, she could only laugh. With Oakley’s immense influence, it’s the sort of thing he could actually make happen. After they officially became a couple, he no longer hid his affection for her; his eyes were full of possessiveness.
