Chapter 6 Return It

As expected of him. Emily let out a scornful laugh. Didn’t you say that he swore he’d never gamble again?”

Maurice sighed helplessly. He really said that back then! I promise you, Mills, this is

absolutely the last time

He’s your brother, Mills! Please just ask Mr. Holton for help one last time. This amount of money is nothing to him.”

I don’t have a brother who’s hopeless beyond help like him.”

Emily refused to be guilttripped by family ties any longer, and she had no intention of supporting such parasitic relatives. Besides, Gabriel and I are getting divorced soon. Don’t bother me with such things anymore.”

Then, she hung up before Maurice could answer and immediately blocked his number

Exhausted from being up half the night and busy working the entire afternoon, Emily was completely drained. She took a shower and fell into a deep sleep as soon as she lay down

Halfasleep, she thought she heard the door open. A slightly calloused hand gently brushed her cheek tenderly, as if handling a fragile treasure

Her eyelashes fluttered, and she murmured affectionately, Mom”

Gabriel looked at her curled form under the blanket, sitting in silence for a long while before

retreating to his study

He took out a velvet box from the safe. Inside was a sapphire necklace worth tens of millions of dollars. It was supposed to be his gift for Emily on her birthday last year. But he never ended up giving it to her

As he ran his fingers over the gleaming gemstones, a video call notification popped up on his computer, interrupting his thoughts

He accepted the call, and his assistant, Roman Drayton, appeared on the screen. Mr. Holton, there was a gift delivered to the hospital where Mrs. Holton works, as scheduled. I’ve intercepted it.”

Gabriel snapped the box in his hands shut with a cold smile. What did he send this time?”

A butterfly brooch. The message on the card is the same as the previous years.”

His face darkened

For two years, ever since they married, a gift from an anonymous sender had arrived at Emily’s workplace the day before her birthday. It was addressed to her, but the contact number Gabriel used was the one listed

The greeting card was never signed, bearing only the words, Best wishes.”

Gabriel had used every connection to trace the sender. The trail showed that the package had

been sent from overseas

There was only one person whom Gabriel could think of who would do something like this- Robert Dowling. He had gone through great trouble and expense just to send Emily birthday wishes

How deeply touching

Mr. Holton, the gift you ordered for Mrs. Holton this year has also arrived. Should I—”

No. Return it.”

He tossed the velvet box back into the safe. These unwanted, budding emotions should remain locked away, just like that gift, forever hidden in darkness

Emily, meanwhile, had slept unusually well. Though she didn’t make a habit of celebrating her birthday, she still made herself a small dessert

Sitting alone at the dining table in the cold, quiet villa, she was quietly eating when

notification popped up on her phone. It was a message from Mallory

Quick, Mills! Check out the trending news. That damn mistress is at it again!”

Emily clicked into the app and saw the top search result. Mr. Holton booked out Crestmont Harbor for his beloved’s birthday! Grand fireworks display at 8:00 pm sharp!”

Fuming, Mallory hastily called Emily. That bitch shares the same birthday as you? What an unfortunate occurrence!”

It’s alright, don’t waste your energy being angry. She’s not worth it,Emily coaxed her

I just don’t get it! Looks, figure, educationwhat does Amelia have that you don’t? Is there something wrong with Gabriel’s eyes? How could he be taken in by someone like that?”

Emily looked down at the dessert on her plate. Maybe I’m just not his type.”

After Mallory vented a while longer and hung up, Emily walked over to the window. The villa was near the harbor and was arguably the best spot to watch the fireworks, which led Emily to

contemplate whether this was an intentional move from Gabriel

Had Gabriel meant for her to see this grand display? Did he want her to watch her own husband declare his love for another woman

Emily didn’t know how long she stood by the window. All she knew was that when the first firework went off, half the sky turned pink

Tilting her head back toward the sky, amid the noisy cheers, she whispered with a smile, ”

Happy birthday, Emily.”

Meanwhile, Amelia was standing beside Gabriel at the harbor pier

🌙 Part 1 — The Night of Exhaustion

It was 2 a.m. when Emily Sterling lay curled up on the bed, her body trembling from exhaustion. Her husband, Gabriel Holton, had just returned from a business trip after several days, and all his pent-up desire had exploded into wild intensity.
The floor was littered with used condoms — eight in total. Emily’s throat was sore from crying out, her limbs heavy like stone. When she whispered “Water,” Gabriel wordlessly helped her sit up and brought a glass to her lips.

💔 Part 2 — Beauty Beside a Stranger

Under the warm light, Emily gazed at the man she had married two years ago. Gabriel’s sharp, striking features glowed with confidence and power — the kind of man women fell for instantly. But to Emily, he was a mystery, both familiar and unreachable.
In that quiet moment, a thought bloomed in her heart: maybe it was time for them to have a baby — a child with both their blood. Maybe a baby could bring warmth to their cold marriage.

❄️ Part 3 — The Shattered Dream

Her daydream shattered when Gabriel’s deep, indifferent voice broke the silence.
“Remember to take your pills tomorrow.”
Emily froze, then forced a bitter smile. “Even with condoms, you’re still not reassured?”
Gabriel’s lips curled in mockery. “What do you think?”
His cold words stabbed through her chest, crushing what little hope remained. The tension hung heavy between them, until a sudden phone ringtone pierced the air.

📱 Part 4 — The Name That Killed the Silence

Emily glanced at the glowing phone screen — the name Amelia appeared.
Amelia Waverly. The woman everyone knew as Gabriel’s childhood sweetheart. They had grown up together, studied together, and when she returned from abroad, Gabriel personally appointed her as his secretary. Their connection was deep, their bond undeniable. Everyone whispered that Amelia was the true woman in Gabriel’s heart — not his wife.

Part 5 — A Call That Broke Her Heart

Gabriel picked up the call immediately. Amelia’s soft voice floated clearly through the quiet room:
“Gabe, I think I’m running a slight fever. Can you take me to the hospital?”
Gabriel’s voice softened, almost tender. “Sure. Rest for now. I’ll be there shortly.”
He hung up, his expression tight with concern. Emily’s fingers trembled under the blanket as she watched him hurry to dress. A wave of pain hit her.

🌧️ Part 6 — The Memory That Burned

Her mind flashed back to last year — when she had gone on a medical mission to the countryside. A disaster struck, and terrified, she had called Gabriel for help.
But instead of comforting her, he had mocked her for “overreacting,” hanging up coldly. That night, she had nearly died in fear — and he hadn’t cared.
Now, Amelia had a mild fever, and Gabriel was willing to rush out in the middle of the night. For Emily, it was clear: her husband had never loved her.

🕯️ Part 7 — The Jealous Wife

Driven by anger and pain, Emily threw off the blanket, ran to the door, and blocked Gabriel’s path. “It’s so late. Do you really have to go?”
Gabriel looked down at her, his eyes flat, unreadable. “You’re jealous?”
Emily bit her lip and nodded. “As your wife, shouldn’t I be?”
He smirked cruelly. “You’re not worthy of being jealous of Amelia.”
His words sliced through her soul. Without another glance, he turned the doorknob and walked out, slamming the door into her shoulder as he left.

🌪️ Part 8 — Left Behind in Silence

Emily stumbled backward and collapsed to the floor. The slam echoed like thunder in her mind. Moments later, she heard the roar of his car engine fading into the distance.
The room was now painfully quiet. The sheets still smelled of him, but the warmth was gone. She wrapped her arms around her knees, trembling, tears streaming endlessly.
For the first time, she admitted the truth — she had fallen into an abyss of her own making.

💧 Part 9 — A Fool’s Love

Emily realized she had always known this marriage was hollow. She had tried to fill it with love, patience, and faith, but Gabriel had only ever kept one woman in his heart — Amelia.
She was nothing but a placeholder, a name on a marriage certificate, a woman to share his bed but not his heart.
Still, she couldn’t stop the ache. Even in pain, she had loved him too deeply, hoping he might one day look at her with tenderness. That hope now turned to ashes.

🔥 Part 10 — The Final Blow

Just as her tears began to dry, her phone rang again.
It was her best friend, Mallory Prescott.
“Mills! Guess who I just saw — your husband! He’s got a woman in his arms, and they look real close. That bastard! Couldn’t he have gone to any other hospital? He came to yours! Is he trying to disgust you on purpose?”
Emily’s hand trembled as she listened. Her vision blurred with tears, not from surprise — but confirmation. Everything she had feared was real.
Gabriel hadn’t just left her alone; he had humiliated her completely.

That night, Emily Sterling realized it was truly time to leave — not just the house, but the man who had never once looked back.
