Chapter 23 What Do You Take Me For

Mallory again? Gabriel always tended to blame everything on someone else

A flicker of wariness flashed in Emily’s eyes. Uttering each word slowly and clearly, she announced, This has nothing to do with her. I just don’t like you anymore. I wasn’t joking when I said I wanted a divorce, Gabriel.”

The playful smirk instantly vanished from Gabriel’s face. His fingers tightened around her chin with such force that he almost crushed her bones

What makes you think you can stop liking me whenever you want? What do you take me for?”

An illtimed, intrusive knock suddenly sounded at the door before Amelia’s tearful voice followed. Gabe, are you in there? I’m so scared”

Emily eyed his stormy expression and suddenly laughed bitterly and sarcastically. Your lover is here, Mr. Holton. Aren’t you going to open the door? Don’t leave her pitifully waiting

outside.”

She shoved his arms away, got up, and smoothed her wrinkled clothes

Gabriel shot her a cold look before getting up to open the door

The moment it swung open, Amelia rushed in like a frightened animal with tears brimming in

her eyes

Gabe, the hotel I was staying at caught fire. The fire trucks are there, and I have nowhere to

go”

As she said this, her gaze slid briefly toward Emily

It was a good thing she’d bribed Gabriel’s driver and followed Gabriel here the moment she learned that he was with Emily. Otherwise, who knew what might happen between them tonight

Emily crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, watching the poorly acted performance with cold detachment

A hotel on fire? How could she not have received a single news alert for such a major incident

Get your lover a fiveyear presidential suite, Mr. Holton,” Emily said as she jutted her chin in the direction of the door. Off you go then.”

Amelia pretended to notice her only then and pitifully bit her lip. It’s almost dark now and

too late to find another place. I’m scared to stay anywhere alone, too”

Turning to Emily, she pleaded, Dr. Sterling, could Istay here for just one night?”

Emily almost laughed in disbelief. No. You’re not welcome here.”

Just then, her phone buzzed. She glanced down at the screen and noticed a bank transfer

notification

Gabriel’s cold voice sounded above her head. Two thousand dollars for rent.”

With that, he led Amelia straight toward the spare bedroom

Standing in the living room, Emily could feel her blood boiling in her veins as she muttered, Wonderful. Just wonderful, Gabriel.”

After her initial rage subsided, she thought about the two thousand dollars rent for a single night

Fine. She’d just see it as a stray dog barging in for one disgusting night

Moments later, Amelia reappeared and softly said in an entitled tone, Dr. Sterling, could you

…

go downstairs and pick up some toiletries for me? Also, I need a bathrobe, too. I’m a bit of a clean freak who doesn’t like using other people’s belongings.”

Emily didn’t even bother looking up. There’s a 24/7 convenience store downstairs. Turn right and help yourself.”

Amelia froze before looking pleadingly behind her. Sure enough, Gabriel stepped out of the bedroom, and his judgmental gaze settled on Emily

I’ve paid rent, so you should provide the corresponding service.”

Emily laughed inwardly at the word service. What did he take her for, a hotel attendant he could order around for just two thousand dollars

She looked up to meet his dark, emotionless eyes and snapped, I never told you to move in or demanded money from you!”

If

you can’t stand itshe said, pointing at the door. I’ll refund every single dollar. Now take your lover and get out of here.”

The air instantly grew thick with tension

Amelia shook her head and looked cautiously out the windows. Don’t be mad or fight Dr. Sterling for me, Gabe

It looks like the weather’s turning dark. I’ll just buy it myself and be back soon. Don’t worry.”

Gabriel glanced toward the windows at the heavy clouds, and his expression darkened further. I’ll go.”

With that, he grabbed his coat and stepped out without looking back

As Emily remained standing rooted to the spot, her heart sank. He was so thoughtful in a way he’d never been with her. Even if she’d burned with a high fever and passed out at home, he’d never once shown a moment of concern

Now, it struck her that he wasn’t cold by nature. He’d simply saved all his warmth and concern for someone else

Emily,Amelia’s voice rang out, stripped of sweet pretense

She was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, and all traces of the earlier vulnerable innocence were gone

What’s the point of you clinging so shamelessly to Gabe?”

Emily was not surprised by her sudden change in attitude. He came to me, and I’ve asked for a divorce. He’s the one refusing to let go.”

Her tone was calm, as if she were stating a fact

🌙 Part 1 — The Night of Exhaustion

It was 2 a.m. when Emily Sterling lay curled up on the bed, her body trembling from exhaustion. Her husband, Gabriel Holton, had just returned from a business trip after several days, and all his pent-up desire had exploded into wild intensity.
The floor was littered with used condoms — eight in total. Emily’s throat was sore from crying out, her limbs heavy like stone. When she whispered “Water,” Gabriel wordlessly helped her sit up and brought a glass to her lips.

💔 Part 2 — Beauty Beside a Stranger

Under the warm light, Emily gazed at the man she had married two years ago. Gabriel’s sharp, striking features glowed with confidence and power — the kind of man women fell for instantly. But to Emily, he was a mystery, both familiar and unreachable.
In that quiet moment, a thought bloomed in her heart: maybe it was time for them to have a baby — a child with both their blood. Maybe a baby could bring warmth to their cold marriage.

❄️ Part 3 — The Shattered Dream

Her daydream shattered when Gabriel’s deep, indifferent voice broke the silence.
“Remember to take your pills tomorrow.”
Emily froze, then forced a bitter smile. “Even with condoms, you’re still not reassured?”
Gabriel’s lips curled in mockery. “What do you think?”
His cold words stabbed through her chest, crushing what little hope remained. The tension hung heavy between them, until a sudden phone ringtone pierced the air.

📱 Part 4 — The Name That Killed the Silence

Emily glanced at the glowing phone screen — the name Amelia appeared.
Amelia Waverly. The woman everyone knew as Gabriel’s childhood sweetheart. They had grown up together, studied together, and when she returned from abroad, Gabriel personally appointed her as his secretary. Their connection was deep, their bond undeniable. Everyone whispered that Amelia was the true woman in Gabriel’s heart — not his wife.

Part 5 — A Call That Broke Her Heart

Gabriel picked up the call immediately. Amelia’s soft voice floated clearly through the quiet room:
“Gabe, I think I’m running a slight fever. Can you take me to the hospital?”
Gabriel’s voice softened, almost tender. “Sure. Rest for now. I’ll be there shortly.”
He hung up, his expression tight with concern. Emily’s fingers trembled under the blanket as she watched him hurry to dress. A wave of pain hit her.

🌧️ Part 6 — The Memory That Burned

Her mind flashed back to last year — when she had gone on a medical mission to the countryside. A disaster struck, and terrified, she had called Gabriel for help.
But instead of comforting her, he had mocked her for “overreacting,” hanging up coldly. That night, she had nearly died in fear — and he hadn’t cared.
Now, Amelia had a mild fever, and Gabriel was willing to rush out in the middle of the night. For Emily, it was clear: her husband had never loved her.

🕯️ Part 7 — The Jealous Wife

Driven by anger and pain, Emily threw off the blanket, ran to the door, and blocked Gabriel’s path. “It’s so late. Do you really have to go?”
Gabriel looked down at her, his eyes flat, unreadable. “You’re jealous?”
Emily bit her lip and nodded. “As your wife, shouldn’t I be?”
He smirked cruelly. “You’re not worthy of being jealous of Amelia.”
His words sliced through her soul. Without another glance, he turned the doorknob and walked out, slamming the door into her shoulder as he left.

🌪️ Part 8 — Left Behind in Silence

Emily stumbled backward and collapsed to the floor. The slam echoed like thunder in her mind. Moments later, she heard the roar of his car engine fading into the distance.
The room was now painfully quiet. The sheets still smelled of him, but the warmth was gone. She wrapped her arms around her knees, trembling, tears streaming endlessly.
For the first time, she admitted the truth — she had fallen into an abyss of her own making.

💧 Part 9 — A Fool’s Love

Emily realized she had always known this marriage was hollow. She had tried to fill it with love, patience, and faith, but Gabriel had only ever kept one woman in his heart — Amelia.
She was nothing but a placeholder, a name on a marriage certificate, a woman to share his bed but not his heart.
Still, she couldn’t stop the ache. Even in pain, she had loved him too deeply, hoping he might one day look at her with tenderness. That hope now turned to ashes.

🔥 Part 10 — The Final Blow

Just as her tears began to dry, her phone rang again.
It was her best friend, Mallory Prescott.
“Mills! Guess who I just saw — your husband! He’s got a woman in his arms, and they look real close. That bastard! Couldn’t he have gone to any other hospital? He came to yours! Is he trying to disgust you on purpose?”
Emily’s hand trembled as she listened. Her vision blurred with tears, not from surprise — but confirmation. Everything she had feared was real.
Gabriel hadn’t just left her alone; he had humiliated her completely.

That night, Emily Sterling realized it was truly time to leave — not just the house, but the man who had never once looked back.
