Chapter 17 This Isn’t the Medication I Had Prescribed to Him
The next day, Emily was discharged from the hospital. After returning to the hotel her team was staying at, she took half a day off to get some rest before throwing herself back into the medical mission.
However, when she headed outside in the afternoon, a middle–aged man approached her and yelled, “You–you’re the one who’s trying to kill my father! You’ll pay for what you’ve done!”
Before she could figure out what was happening, she heard an onlooker say, “I heard a doctor from the medical mission prescribed the wrong medication to an old man. I think they almost killed the patient.”
“I heard the old man is still receiving emergency treatment as we speak. I’m not sure if he’s still alive.”
Emily was in shock. How could she have prescribed the wrong medication?
With someone backing him up, the middle–aged man, Bradley Meville, became more and
more obnoxious.
“What kind of doctor endangers the life of their patients? Are you being reckless and irresponsible because we don’t reside in a big city like you do? Why are you here on a medical mission if you think we’re inferior to you?” Bradley spat viciously.
As soon as the words left his mouth, the crowd turned on Emily and began to shower her with
accusations.
The latter couldn’t care less about the rowdy pedestrians. She tried to make her way through
the crowd in order to head toward the hospital.
Bradley’s expression darkened as he blocked her way to stop her from leaving. “There’s no way I’m letting you make a run for it! You’re not allowed to go anywhere today. I am demanding an explanation from you.”
Based on his tone, Emily felt that he wasn’t concerned about his father at all. Instead, he seemed to be deliberately stirring up trouble. Hence, she began to find Bradley incredibly suspicious.
“I’m not trying to make a run for it. I’m going to check on your father’s condition,” she replied.
Scanning the crowd, she raised her voice and continued, “If you don’t believe me, feel free to follow me so you can see it for yourself. If you refuse to let me go, your father might miss the

optimal window for his treatment.”

Not all of the onlookers were fools. After hearing what she’d just said, some grew curious and immediately followed her into the hospital building. Left with no choice, Bradley could only follow the group inside.
Bradley’s father was lying on a hospital bed. His eyes were shut, and his complexion looked pale. The medical staff had managed to stabilize his condition, but he was still unconscious.
After asking the emergency doctor about the situation, Emily found out that the old man had suffered from a case of drug poisoning.
“What an incompetent doctor! You’re an incompetent doctor who’s ruining the lives of the people!” Bradley immediately started yelling.
As a doctor, being able to prescribe medication was a basic skill. So, how did she make a mistake? She tried to recall what had happened the previous day, but nothing seemed out of
place.
In the midst of her confusion, a group of reporters swarmed over. They pointed a camera directly at her and then bombarded her with questions.
“What do you have to say about the old man who almost died because of your prescription, Dr. Sterling?”
“Do you harbor any prejudice against the people who reside in this area, Dr. Sterling?”
“We heard the participant list for this medical mission was determined based on a random selection, Dr. Sterling. Is that why you’re upset over the entire ordeal?”
Every single one of the reporters‘ questions was more aggressive and pointed than the last. Besides, this incident had just occurred. So, how had this group of reporters caught wind of it already?
Aside from Amelia, Emily couldn’t think of another person who’d frame her for something like this. Despite her suspicions, she had more important matters at hand. She needed to figure out how the old man was poisoned.
As she was thinking about the issue, her eyes landed on the drug vial in the emergency doctor’s hand.
“I’d like to take a look at that drug vial,” she said.
Bradley immediately tried to stop her. “Don’t give it to her! She’s trying to destroy the evidence!”

To his dismay, Emily was quicker than he was. She swiftly grabbed the drug vial and opened it up to smell the contents. The scent of that drug was slightly different from the one she had prescribed to the old man.
So, she turned toward the crowd and declared, “This isn’t the medication I had prescribed to the patient.”
Bradley’s wife, Viola, began sobbing instantly. “Are you still trying to defend yourself? I’m the one who accompanied my father–in–law to the hospital yesterday. They gave him the same medication you’re holding right now!”
She then added, “Look, everyone–the incompetent doctor is trying to weasel her way out of this mess!”
After exchanging glances, the reporters swiftly shoved their microphones in Emily’s face.
“Now that there’s proof, what else do you have to say about yourself, Dr. Sterling?”
“Do you not have any ethics as a doctor?”
“You’re exhibiting a blatant disregard for human life!”
While Emily was being cornered by the crowd, she caught sight of Gabriel from her peripheral vision. The latter was carefully helping Amelia down the hallway as the pair exited from the other end of the corridor.
With the huge commotion that was going on, he must’ve seen her in the crowd. Yet, he still chose to ignore her while he escorted his first love out of the hospital.
She wryly averted her gaze and mentally prepared herself to respond to the reporters. The next moment, Mallory pushed through the crowd and placed herself in front of her.
“Our hospital staff are only here on a medical mission because we care about your health and your wellbeing. If it weren’t for that, why would we even be here?” she asked.
She continued, “Dr. Sterling is not acquainted with the patient’s family at all. She has no motive to harm him.
“Once the drug had left our medical station, it passed through several locations and came in contact with multiple people. How can you prove that it was the same drug Dr. Sterling had prescribed to the patient?
“Crowding around her will only make it harder for her to figure out what happened. It doesn’t help the situation at all.”
Subsequently, Mallory sharpened her gaze and said, “Unless… you don’t care about the truth

or the old man’s life. You’re only concerned about causing a scene.”
