Chapter80

Johnathan, Darrick, and the rest had arranged a celebration

dinner for Ellsworth, all close friends from their circle.

Harriet, meanwhile, was working overtime at the company.

A little after seven, as Harriet was packing up to leave, her phone rang. It was a call from Johnathan.

She answered with a smile, “Mr. Burton.”

On the other end, Johnathan said, “Hara, Ells just secured the

project in Silver Creek District. We’re all having dinner together

tonight. Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”

Hearing Johnathan’s words, Harriet replied gently, “You all go

celebrate. I’m at home with Grandpa, so I won’t be joining you.”

It wasn’t about being pretentious or putting on airs. The truth was, apart from Johnathan’s call, no one had informed her at

all.

It was a last-minute invitation.

Forget it.

She didn’t need to join in the festivities.

Besides, Kelsey would definitely be there. If she went, it would

only be awkward for herself-there was no need for that.

From the press conference to now, and even at the lunch

reception, Kelsey had been by Ellsworth’s side the whole time,

acting as the hostess. Some people even mistook her for Mrs.

Townsend and called her that directly.

Kelsey didn’t deny it, and Ellsworth didn’t bother to explain

much either.

But Johnathan said, “Hara, you’re at the courtyard house, right?

I’ll come pick you up now.”

Before he could finish, Harriet quickly said, “Johnathan, you

really don’t have to.”

Afraid Johnathan would insist, Harriet sighed and said quietly,

“Johnathan, I was the last to know about this project. No one

told me about the lunch or the celebration dinner tonight.”

“Johnathan, I know you mean well, but please don’t make

things harder for me, okay?”

With Harriet saying this much, Johnathan fell silent on the other

end.

He had thought Harriet knew.

After a moment of silence, Johnathan said, “Alright, I won’t

push you.”

Only then did Harriet breathe a sigh of relief and say with a

smile, “Thank you, Mr. Burton.”

After hanging up with Harriet, Johnathan glanced back at the

crowd.

At that moment, Kelsey was beaming beside Ellsworth, looking

every bit the hostess, as if she were the star of the evening.

Johnathan let out a long sigh. Maybe it was better that Hara

didn’t come to this event.

In the office.

After convincing Johnathan not to pick her up, Harriet sat at her

desk for a while with her phone before grabbing her car keys

and heading home.

Not long after she started keeping Ralph company at the

Chavez’s mansion, Patsy called to ask if she hadn’t been back

to Auburn Heights these past few days.

Sitting at the chess table, Harriet said, “I’ve been at home with Grandpa these days. Ells came over too. I’ll go back today.”

Even without Patsy’s call, Harriet had planned to go back tonight anyway. After all, Ellsworth’s projects were all signed, and the time they had agreed on for the divorce had come. She needed to go back and see where Ellsworth stood.

So, after playing two more games of chess with Ralph, Harriet

drove back.

When she got home, it was ten o’clock at night, and Ellsworth

still hadn’t returned.

It wasn’t until after midnight, as she was sitting on the bed

reading and about to fall asleep, that Ellsworth finally came

back. It seemed Johnathan had come over too.

Hearing the sounds downstairs, Harriet slipped on her slippers

and went downstairs.

When she entered the living room, sure enough, she saw that

Johnathan had also arrived.

Both of them had been drinking.

As Harriet came down from the second floor, Johnathan stood

with both hands in his pockets, looked up at her, and smiled,

saying, “Hara, I’ve brought him back to you.”

Harriet walked over with a smile. “Thank you for the trouble, Mr.

Burton.”

Harriet smiled gently, while Ellsworth, looking a bit lazy, turned

his face to Johnathan and said, “Nathan, you can go back.

There’s nothing here.”

“Alright,” Johnathan replied with a smile. He glanced at Harriet

and gently patted her arm. “Hara, I’ll head out first. Ells is in your

hands now.”

Johnathan’s words and actions, aside from the greeting, clearly

carried comfort and sympathy-sympathy for her being

neglected, for being a wife yet an outsider in Ellsworth’s life.

Harriet nodded. “Okay.”

Off to the side, Ellsworth said coolly, “Nathan, she’s not a three-

year-old. She doesn’t need to be coddled.”

Johnathan quickly turned to look at Ellsworth, stared at him for

a while, then finally smiled and said, “Alright, I’ll be going then.”

With that, Johnathan turned and left first.

With the way he treated Hara, if she ever filed for divorce and

he tried to talk her out of it, Johnathan would be a fool.
