Chapter 78

Chapter 78

After showering and coming out of the bathroom, Harriet was

about to dry her hair with a hairdryer when someone knocked

on her door.

Harriet, still towel-drying her hair, walked unhurriedly to open

the door.

She thought it was Deloris coming to ask what she wanted for

breakfast tomorrow, but when she opened the door, Harriet’s

hand froze mid-motion.

She stared motionlessly at the person in front of her for a long

moment before asking in surprise, “What are you doing here?”

At that moment, Harriet never expected Ellsworth to show up.

In three years of marriage, he had visited the Chavez’s mansion

so few times she could count them on one hand.

It was truly surprising now.

Ellsworth didn’t respond to Harriet’s surprise.

At the side, Deloris spoke up first. She said, “Miss, sir, you two

should get some rest. I’ll head downstairs now.”

With that, Deloris quickly turned and went downstairs, leaving

Ellsworth and Harriet standing upstairs.

Watching Deloris leave, Harriet hurriedly opened the door wider

to make way for Ellsworth. “Come in first, then we’ll talk.”

Ellsworth entered the room, and Harriet quickly cleared the

clothes off the sofa to make space for him to sit.

Harriet’s room was simple-a square room with a sofa, a desk, a

large wardrobe, a front window facing the corridor and front

yard, a back window facing the backyard, and the bathroom just

to the right after entering.

This house was much more modest than her marital home at

Auburn Heights, but it lacked nothing and was very comfortable

to live in.

Ellsworth didn’t sit down. He just looked at Harriet with little

emotion and said, “Not coming home anymore? Quite the

temper you have.”

Harriet closed the door casually. “No, I just wanted to spend

some time with Grandpa.”

After Harriet spoke, Ellsworth didn’t reply,

He glanced at Harriet, then at her room. Before they got

married, he used to come here often. It was exactly the same

as before, not a thing had changed.

When his gaze landed on Harriet’s bookshelf and he saw her

diary, Ellsworth’s attention lingered there for a moment before

he looked away as if nothing had happened.

At that moment, Harriet said to him, “I’m not going back to

Auburn Heights tonight. Are you heading back now, or…”

Before Harriet could finish, Ellsworth reached out and grabbed

a handful of her half-wet, half-dry hair.

Seeing this, Harriet quickly glanced back at her hair and

explained, “I’ll dry it in a minute.”

Withdrawing his hand, Ellsworth asked her unhurriedly, “Do you

have any clothes here that I can wear?”

“I don’t think so,” Harriet replied. “If you don’t mind, I can get

you a set of Grandpa’s clothes.”

Ellsworth agreed, so Harriet went downstairs and brought up a

set of Ralph’s tai chi clothes-a white top and black satin pants.

Soon after, as Harriet finished drying her hair, Ellsworth came

out of the shower, dressed in Ralph’s clothes.

He was good-looking to begin with, and even in Ralph’s clothes,

he looked the part, carrying a unique charm.

Harriet stared at Ellsworth for a moment before saying, “You

look pretty good.”

Ellsworth rubbed his hair with a towel and smiled, clearly

enjoying her compliment.

The next morning, when the two of them went downstairs for

breakfast, Ralph was surprised too-he hadn’t expected

Ellsworth to come.

But he still greeted him with a big smile. “Ells, you’re here too.”

“Good morning, Grandpa,” Ellsworth said energetically, then

asked, “How have you been feeling these days?”

Ralph replied, “Not bad at all. I’m already doing much better than most people my age.”

Smiling, Ellsworth sat with Ralph and had breakfast at home. He

promised Ralph he would come back more often, and only then

did the two of them get up to head to work.

At the gate, seeing Ralph standing there for a long time without

going back inside, Deloris said, “A prodigal son who returns is

worth more than gold. Sir will treat Miss well from now on.

Miss’s happiness is yet to come.”

Ralph gripped his cane with both hands and shook his head.

“Ells doesn’t have Hara in his heart. Even if he’s polite, it won’t

last long. The sooner they separate, the better.”

Even though Ralph had been polite and warm to Ellsworth at

breakfast, deep down he still hoped the two would get divorced

soon.

They’re just not right for each other.

It wasn’t until Ellsworth’s car turned the corner and disappeared

from view that Ralph finally turned back inside, leaning on his

cane.

After returning to the company from the Chavez’s mansion, life

went back to normal.

That afternoon, Harriet had lunch out with Kathie.

Sitting across from each other, Kathie asked, “How are things between you and Ells lately? You two seemed to be getting along pretty well after coming back from Rockville Resort.”
