Chapter42
As soon as she finished speaking, the door to the hospital room
opened.
Hearing the sound, Harriet looked up.
She thought it was Kenneth coming in, but it turned out to be
Ellsworth.
Looking at Ellsworth in surprise, Harriet asked, “Why are you
back again?”
Ellsworth didn’t answer. He simply placed the late-night snack
he brought on the dining table and walked over nonchalantly.
Looking up, she saw Ellsworth with both hands in his pockets, his eyes calm as he looked at her. Harriet said softly, “Grandpa
is already asleep.”
“Mm,” Ellsworth replied indifferently.
Ellsworth didn’t explain why he had come, and Harriet didn’t
ask. She turned her face back to continue watching the
sleeping Ralph.
Chapter42
After watching Harriet for a while, Ellsworth pulled out the chair
next to her and sat down as well.
The hospital room was very quiet, with only a nightlight left on.
Seeing Harriet keeping watch over Ralph day and night,
Ellsworth said, “Your grandpa is already asleep. There’s not
much point in you staring at him.”
After several days in the hospital, she had lost quite a bit of
weight.
Without turning to look at Ellsworth, Harriet still held Ralph’s
hand and said quietly, “Grandpa is all I have left.”
Her parents were gone, and there were no other relatives at
home. Ralph was her only family.
Ellsworth just looked at her in profile as Harriet spoke with such
emotion.
Her skin was fair, her features delicate, and her upturned nose
especially attractive. Only her lips were drier than usual, her jet-
black hair a bit oily, and her eyes full of exhaustion.
It wasn’t just the fatigue from taking care of Ralph.
Chapter42
After staring at Harriet for a while, Ellsworth withdrew his gaze.
Harriet’s words meant that he hadn’t fulfilled his responsibilities.
as a husband.
Looking at Harriet again, seeing that she no longer paid
attention to him as she used to, barely even looking at him,
Ellsworth said in a flat voice, “I bought you some late-night
snacks.”
“Late-night snacks?” Harriet turned her head.
She was very surprised.
She was surprised that Ellsworth actually bought her a late-
night snack. In the past few years, she wouldn’t have even
dared to dream of such a thing.
Their eyes met. Harriet glanced at the dining table, saw two
takeout bags from a tea restaurant, then looked back at
Ellsworth and smiled, saying, “I’m not hungry. If you…”
Before Harriet could finish her sentence, she saw the cold look
in Ellsworth’s eyes and swallowed the rest of her words.
After all, she still cared about his gaze, and deep down, she was
still a little afraid of him.
Chapter42
Maybe it was because she had liked him too much in the past, so even now, she still cared.
She looked directly at Ellsworth for a while, but seeing that he
still had that unyielding attitude, Harriet had no choice but to
say, “Then I’ll go eat outside.”
So, carrying the late-night snack Ellsworth had brought, the two
of them sat side by side on a bench in the corridor.
She opened the late-night snack Ellsworth had brought.
Everything looked delicious, but she was allergic to many foods.
After eating a piece of pastry, Harriet turned to look at Ellsworth
and smiled, saying, “Thank you, Ellsworth. You’ve worked hard
taking care of my grandpa these past few days.”
Harriet was very polite, but also kept her distance.
Seeing that she only ate the pastry, Ellsworth asked, “Don’t you
like the food?”
Harriet smiled and explained, “No, it’s just that I’m allergic to
other foods.”
“I
“…” Ellsworth.
Chapter 42
Looking back at the wall opposite, Ellsworth raised his hand to brush his hair, feeling a bit awkward.
He had been in such a rush earlier to buy food that he forgot to check what he had actually bought.
Ellsworth didn’t say anything, so Harriet quickly tried to smooth things over with a smile, saying, “The pastries from this place are really good, better than the ones I used to buy.”
Ellsworth smiled, “Then eat more.”
“Okay.”
After eating a few pieces of water chestnut cake, Harriet put the snack aside, looked at the wall opposite, and said with
emotion, “I’ve spent too little time with Grandpa these past years. In the past few days, I’ve realized he’s aged a lot-he’s really become an old man.”
With both arms resting on the back of the bench, Ellsworth
asked, “Your grandpa is over seventy, right?”
Harriet replied, “Seventy-five, one year younger than your
grandpa.”
Ellsworth glanced at Harriet and asked her, “How old are you

this year?”
Looking at Ellsworth, Harriet couldn’t help but laugh, feeling like a child whose parent didn’t even know what grade she was in.
She knew Ellsworth didn’t like her or pay attention to her, but
she hadn’t expected that he didn’t even know her age.
