Chapter40

Chapter40

After moving a knight, Ralph suddenly said to Ellsworth, “Ells,

Hara’s mother passed away early, and her father was always

busy with work and had no time for her. All these years, it’s my

fault for not raising Hara well, for letting her cause you trouble.

I’m truly sorry for that.”

At Ralph’s words, Ellsworth looked up at him.

Ralph’s words were a slap in the face, and Ellsworth was quite

surprised by them.

Seeing Ellsworth’s confusion, Ralph smiled and continued, “That girl Hara asked me for her birth certificate a while ago. I don’t know if she’s mentioned divorce to you, but if she has, Ells, you don’t need to consider this old man’s feelings. If you

don’t like her, just agree to it.”

Before Ellsworth could say anything, Ralph added, “Back then, what happened between you two was because Hara acted impulsively. She delayed you for several years. When the time comes, I’ll have her apologize to you properly.”

The Townsend family was of high status, but he had only

started out as Ralph’s driver.

Although he had done some things later on and managed to

save a little for his granddaughter, he was always aware that

their families were not a good match.

So now, when he advised Ellsworth to get a divorce, Ralph

didn’t say he was wrong at all, nor did he complain on behalf of

his granddaughter. He took all the responsibility upon himself,

saying it was his fault for not raising Harriet well.

At this point, who was right or wrong no longer mattered.

What was important was that both children could start new

lives, without tormenting or hurting each other.

Ralph advising divorce was something Ellsworth had never

expected.

Listening to Ralph finish speaking, Ellsworth only felt that

Ralph’s self-blame made him feel uncomfortable.

Because in this marriage with Harriet, he was the one who had

been restless.

Even if he had been forced into the marriage, he truly had not

fulfilled his duties and responsibilities as a husband.

Chapter 40

Staring motionlessly at Ralph, and seeing that Ralph had fallen silent, Ellsworth broke into a hearty smile and said, “Grandpa,

the matter between Hara and me, we’ll handle it ourselves.

Your health isn’t good, so don’t worry too much. Don’t

overthink it.”

He might show a cold face to Harriet, but to elders, that would

be utterly disrespectful.

He did have that bit of upbringing.

Ralph’s words had indeed surprised him, but he didn’t take

them too much to heart.

After all, it was his own business.

Seeing Ellsworth smile, Ralph continued playing chess and said,

“Alright, I’ve already made my position clear to you. You don’t

need to have so many concerns in the future.”

Ralph spoke harsh truths in a gentle tone,

In any case, he didn’t want Ellsworth as his grandson-in-law

anymore, and he wouldn’t persuade his granddaughter to stay

with Ellsworth. However she treats Ellsworth in the future,

that’s how he’ll treat Ellsworth.

Chapter40

Ellsworth just smiled and said nothing, continuing to play

chess.

After a while, Harriet came over carrying Ralph’s things.

Seeing Ellsworth still in the hospital room with Ralph, she said,

“You’re still here? Go home and get some rest. I’m here, that’s

enough. If anything comes up, I’ll call you.”

She said this every night, but she had never actually called

Ellsworth.

She knew very well in her heart that she would never call

Ellsworth in the future, nor trouble him.

She still remembered last year when she had acute appendicitis,

crying from the pain at home. Kat was away on a business trip,

and unable to reach anyone, she called Ellsworth.

But after several calls, he never answered.

After that, she even blocked his number.

That night, she drove herself to the hospital, crying and

enduring the pain all the way.

Even after she was discharged, she stayed alone in the hospital

the whole time. No one in the Townsend family even knew she had gone to the hospital for an appendectomy, and Ellsworth didn’t notice she had taken a few days off from work.

She never told Kat about it either.

Seeing his granddaughter arrive, Ralph put down his chess piece, stood up and said, “Ells, you should go home and rest

early. Thank you for your hard work these past few days.”

With both grandfather and granddaughter telling him to go

home and rest, Ellsworth didn’t stay any longer. He stood up

with a smile, said goodbye, and left.

He didn’t go to see Kelsey. Instead, he drove and called

Johnathan, inviting him out for a drink.

At the bar, Johnathan arrived before Ellsworth. When he saw

Ellsworth come in, he waved for a young woman to come over

and pour Ellsworth a drink.
