Chapter29

Harriet looked up.

Just as she was thinking of what to say, Kenneth spoke gently

again: “Sit in the front, it’s easier to talk.”

With those words, Harriet understood what he meant.

He wanted to talk about her and Ellsworth.

She looked at Kenneth in silence for a while, but in the end, she

moved to the front seat.

After closing the car door and fastening her seatbelt, Harriet

watched as Kenneth started the car.

The road outside was very quiet. The faint white streetlights

made the night seem even more silent.

With both hands on the steering wheel, Kenneth glanced at

Harriet and asked calmly, “Are you planning to divorce Ells?”

Harriet looked at Kenneth and nodded. “Yes, Ellsworth said he

would handle the paperwork after he finishes a few projects

he’s working on.”

Chapter29

Ellsworth had been stalling on signing the agreement, thinking

she wanted a share of his family’s assets.

Once she made things clear to him, he would sign without

hesitation.

Kenneth didn’t try to persuade Harriet to stay, nor did he

consider things from the Townsend family’s perspective.

Instead, he asked, “What are your plans after divorcing Ells?”

Since Kenneth didn’t try to talk her out of it, Harriet actually

felt relieved.

She said, “I’ll find a job related to my field, and then spend a few

good years with Grandpa.””

After Harriet finished speaking, Kenneth’s expression

darkened slightly, and he fell silent.

Although he had spent years in the military, Kenneth had still

heard about Harriet and Ellsworth’s marriage, and he knew all

about Ellsworth’s attitude toward her.

After a long silence, Kenneth finally asked, “Which company

do you want to go to?”

Harriet replied, “Galaxy Innovations. I sent them my resume a

while ago, and they’ve already responded, saying I can start

anytime.”

When the HR manager at Galaxy Innovations received

Harriet’s resume, he immediately took it to the boss, Reginald

Barton.

After all, the applicant was the vice president of the Townsend

Group.

Reginald was a high-level talent brought in by the national

program a few years ago. He returned at the age of twenty-six

as a postdoctoral fellow and went straight to Amberville

University as a doctoral advisor.

Later, he founded his own tech company. Over the years, he

had made significant contributions to Amberville University

and the country in the field of automation technology.

Now, at thirty-four, he was still single, devoting himself

entirely to his work.

Back when Harriet was still in school, Reginald had already

recognized her talent, thinking she was a promising student

who could be well cultivated in the future.

But who would have thought that right after graduating from

college, Harriet not only chose to get married but also gave up

her field of study.

Every time he thought about it, Reginald felt deeply distressed,

believing her talent had been wasted.

So, when he received Harriet’s resume a few days ago, Reginald

replied to her that very night, saying that as long as she wanted

to come, Galaxy Innovations would always welcome her.

Even though Harriet’s academic qualifications didn’t quite meet

the requirements.

Reginald still welcomed her.

After Harriet said she had already found a job, Kenneth said, “If

you ever need help in the future, you can come to me or Kat!”

“Okay, thank you, Ken.”

After Harriet politely thanked him, the car fell into a brief

silence.

The only sound was that of the car moving along the road.

Kenneth kept driving, while Harriet calmly gazed at the road

ahead.

This time, she and Ellsworth were

cleanly.

More than ten minutes later, the car arrived at her house. The

lights in the yard and living room were left on for her-Patsy had done that.

She had been staying at Auburn Heights lately, keeping an eye on Ellsworth.

Unfastening her seatbelt, Harriet glanced at the yard, then

looked back at Kenneth. “Ken, do you want to come in for a bit? Mom is staying here.”

Kenneth smiled and said, “It’s too late. Mom is probably already resting. I’ll come by next time.”

Harriet nodded. “Alright, next time I’ll invite Kat over too.”

With that, she said goodbye to Kenneth and got out of the car.

Kenneth watched Harriet go inside, but he didn’t start the car

right away.

He saw the light on in the master bedroom upstairs and noticed

the curtains were drawn. With the window rolled down,

Kenneth looked up at the house for a long time.

It wasn’t until his phone rang in his pocket that he snapped out of it, startled, and then started the car and drove away.

But thinking of Kathie’s complaint earlier, and Harriet’s

decision to divorce, even someone as calm and composed as he was couldn’t help but look grim.
