Several lines carry emotional weight, revealing hidden fears, desires, and vulnerabilities. These quotes serve as anchors that stay with the reader and deepen the impact of the scene.

Chapter185

Harriet had known Ellsworth wasn’t stingy even before she

married him.

But after they got married, he felt she wasn’t worth it, that she

didn’t deserve it, so he was unwilling to give her anything.

Otherwise, how could he have been so generous to Kelsey and

the Graham family, giving away such big projects without a

second thought?

When the Graham family needed funds, he didn’t hesitate at all.

Although he had said he wouldn’t treat her well after the

divorce, in reality, the terms were quite generous.

But Raymond said that their marriage was his fault.

Harriet felt a little embarrassed.

She said, Grandpa, it wasn’t your fault. I was the one being

willful. I didn’t understand how he felt.”

Hearing Harriet say this, Raymond understood that she knew

why Ellsworth had been cold to her all these years.

Chapter185

In fact, he really didn’t understand Ellsworth’s thinking.

After all, when he brought up the marriage, that boy agreed

without hesitation.

He thought the two would have a good life together, that he’d

soon have greatgrandchildren. Who could have expected this

outcome?

Clutching the divorce agreement Harriet had handed him,

Raymond pondered for a while, then finally returned Harriet’s

version to her. Ells prepared this one. He’ll definitely only sign

his own. I’ll go talk to him.”

He added, These years have been hard on you.”

Raymond didn’t try to persuade her to stay. The fact that he

was willing to talk to Ellsworth about it made Harriet breathe a

sigh of relief. She smiled and said, It’s all in the past. It’s just another life experience.”

She added, Thank you, Grandpa. I’m sorry for causing trouble for the Townsend family these past few years.”

At Harriet’s politeness, Raymond waved his hand. The rest of us are fine, not affected at all. Just make sure you don’t let it affect you.”

Chapter185

Harriet said, I won’t, Grandpa.”

She continued, Grandpa, you should take a nap. I’ll go find Kat

in the front.”

Raymond said, Go ahead.”

As he watched Harriet get up and leave, Raymond couldn’t help

but feel sad and reluctant.

Among all the young women in their circle, Harriet was his

favorite, the one he had the highest hopes for.

When he first discussed the marriage with old Ralph, Ralph

refused to let his granddaughter marry into the Townsend

family. It took a lot of persuasion before Ralph agreed to ask

his granddaughter’s opinion.

But who could have foreseen this outcome?

He felt deeply sorryso very sorry.

Thinking of this, Raymond felt that the last time he whipped

Ellsworth, he had gone too easy on him.

***

After returning to the front yard, Harriet told Kathie about the

divorce agreement.

Kathie suddenly became a little sentimental.

She said, I always scold Ells and urge you to get a divorce, but

now that you two are really going through with it, I actually feel

sorry for Ells. I think he’s quite pitiful.”

Before Harriet could say anything, Kathie added, I think Ells is

trying his best to keep you, expressing himself in his own way.”

I’ve been his sister for twentythree years, so I know him. Hara,

he really doesn’t want a divorce.”

Hara, as long as you agree not to divorce, I bet Ells would be

willing to give you all his assets.”

Harriet couldn’t help but laugh. She said, He’s generous

because he has the confidence to start over. Besides, I’m too

tired after these years. I don’t want to keep entangling with

him.”

Kathie said, I understand, I really do. It’s just that you’re

completely disappointed and have no hope left. But Hara, can’t

you give Ells one more chance? Just one?”

Usually, the more she scolded Ellsworth, the more sympathetic

Chapter185

she felt for him now that she heard about the division of assets.

Ellsworth, who always cared about his pride and suffered for it,

just couldn’t act spoiled with Hara, couldn’t hold her and say,

Honey, I was wrong, or say a few soft words.

Clearly, he didn’t want a divorce, but he insisted on being proud.

What was so great about Kelsey anyway? She didn’t have any

class at all.

Kathie suddenly switching to persuading her not to divorce

made Harriet feel a bit unaccustomed.

So she just looked at Kathie and said nothing more.

Kathie could see Harriet’s dilemma and, gritting her teeth, said,

How about I get rid of Kelsey for you?”

Harriet couldn’t help but laugh.

After laughing, she said, It’s not all Kelsey’s fault. For a

marriage to come to this, it’s mainly about the two of us. Even

without Kelsey, there would be other women.”

As soon as Harriet finished, Kathie looked aggrieved, opened

her arms, and hugged Harriet, whining, Hara, you have to

Chapter185

promise me that after you divorce my brother, you won’t avoid

me just to avoid him.”
