As she opened her arms to give Johnathan a polite, gentle hug, Johnathan caught sight of a gloomy look at the door and
quickly withdrew his arms.
He said, “Ells looks like he wants to kill me with his eyes. Better
not.”
As Johnathan finished speaking, Harriet turned to look and saw Ellsworth had arrived, hands in his pockets, giving Johnathan a
cold, indifferent look.

Seeing this, Harriet smiled politely and greeted him, “You’re
here.”
As she spoke, she quickly made way for Ellsworth and pulled
out the chair next to her for him: “Sit.”
Harriet was more polite and distant with Ellsworth than with anyone else, including Johnathan.
Seeing this, Johnathan and the others looked at Ellsworth with a bit of sympathy.
After all, he was Harriet’s husband.

Ellsworth, however, just shot Johnathan a cold look, as if
holding a grudge for his attempt to hug Harriet.
Soon, the waiter began serving dishes. Everyone congratulated
Harriet, and she responded to each with a smile.
Tonight, she actually drank quite a bit.
So by the end of the gathering, her legs were weak and her
steps unsteady.
Even though she tried to hold herself together, her constitution
was what it was.
She couldn’t hold her liquor.
At the hotel entrance, as Harriet struggled to keep her eyes
open and steady her steps, Kathie simply put her into
Ellsworth’s arms, letting her wrap her arms around his waist,
and said, “If you don’t use my brother now, when will you?
Besides, it won’t take long. Let my brother carry you.”
At this, Kathie looked up at Ellsworth and reminded him, “Hara
went to see her parents today. Be understanding tonight, don’t
give her a hard time, and don’t upset her.”
It was indeed because she had visited her parents that

afternoon that Harriet drank a few more glasses tonight.
At Kathie’s reminder, Ellsworth glanced at her indifferently, then
reached up to brush the stray hair from Harriet’s face..
Leaning completely into his arms, Harriet raised her hands to
wrap around Ellsworth’s neck and murmured softly, “Kat, I’m
sleeping at your place tonight.”
Looking down at Harriet, his left arm around her waist, Ellsworth
took his car keys from his pocket and handed them to
Johnathan, saying, “Have George bring my car over later.”
Johnathan said, “Just have him drive you and Hara home.”
Ellsworth replied, “Just bring the car over. No need for him to
drive us.”
Johnathan said, “Alright.”
After Johnathan took the car keys, Ellsworth saw Harriet
mistaking him for Kathie, her arms around his neck, her face
buried in his chest. He tidied the hair stuck to her face, then
lowered his head and kissed her on the cheek.

Beside them, Kathie was dumbfounded. The few drinks she had
just had instantly sobered her up.
Staring blankly at Ellsworth for a while, Kathie hiccupped and
looked at him in confusion, asking, “Bro, did you drink fake
alcohol tonight?”
Seeing this, Ellsworth raised his right hand and pushed Kathie’s
face aside, telling her to stay out of the way.
Kathie staggered and almost fell, but Johnathan caught her just
in time.
At that moment, the driver brought Ellsworth’s car over.
Johnathan helped open the passenger door, and as Ellsworth helped Harriet into the car, he was especially careful with the door to keep her from bumping her head.
He even bent down to fasten Harriet’s seatbelt.
Standing by the car, Johnathan watched Ellsworth’s
attentiveness. He turned to Kathie with a meaningful look and asked, “Kat, do you think your brother and Hara will really get
divorced?”
Watching Ellsworth walk around the car to get in, Kathie still couldn’t quite believe it. She said, “Did my brother get hit with

something tonight?”
Johnathan chuckled and patted her on the back of the head.
“Let’s go, I’ll take you home.”
After that, everyone went their separate ways.
Tonight, everyone had a drink–except for Ellsworth.
By now, it was very dark outside.
There was no moon tonight. Ellsworth drove slowly,
occasionally glancing at Harriet, who was sleeping lightly and
easily startled.
It was past ten.
The car stopped at Auburn Heights. Harriet insisted on going
home by herself, claiming she wasn’t drunk and could manage
on her own.
Ellsworth couldn’t argue with her, so he just stayed close to
protect her.
When they got back to the bedroom, Harriet just sat motionless
on the sofa.
Seeing this, Ellsworth put down her bag and phone, then

squatted in front of her, gently holding her hands and softly
asked, “What’s wrong?”
With slightly reddened eyes, Harriet looked at Ellsworth and said sadly, “Kat, I don’t have a mom or a dad anymore.”
Harriet’s voice was very soft and faint.
Ellsworth paused, and his grip on her hands tightened a little.
