After being away on business for over a week, Ellsworth
returned home to be warmly greeted by Jacquelyn: “Mr.
Townsend, you’re back.”
Handing his suit jacket to Jacquelyn, Ellsworth glanced around
both upstairs and downstairs, expressionless as he asked,
“Harriet isn’t home?”
Taking his jacket, Jacquelyn replied, “Mrs. Townsend has been
very busy lately. She was at the lab for the past few days and
hasn’t come home. She’s even lost weight.”
Hearing Jacquelyn’s report, Ellsworth’s brow furrowed slightly,
and he silently went upstairs.
Opening the bedroom door and seeing the room quiet and
empty, Ellsworth walked to the floor–to–ceiling window, took out
his phone, and called Harriet.
Wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, Ellsworth’s fair
skin made the blue veins on the back of his hand stand out.
It was especially alluring.

After a moment, the call connected, and Ellsworth asked in a
calm voice, “Still working overtime?”
On the other end, Harriet continued working as she replied,
“Yes, I’m working late at the lab. There’s still some work to do.”
Ellsworth asked, “Not coming home?”
Staring at her computer, Harriet replied slowly, “I have a
meeting downtown tomorrow. I’ll come back later. You don’t
have to wait for me.”
Ellsworth said nothing more and hung up without a word.
On her end, thinking of what Reginald had said that morning
about thanking Ellsworth, Harriet stared at her phone for a long
time before putting it down and getting back to work.
It wasn’t until after eleven at night that Harriet finally finished
organizing her new data and breathed a sigh of relief.
Stretching, she tidied up and got ready to leave.
The administrative office building was very quiet, and the sound
of high heels on the tiled floor was especially crisp.
After scanning her face to exit the building and heading toward

the parking lot, Harriet noticed that besides her own car, there
were two other cars parked there.
The black car didn’t look like it belonged to a colleague, and it
seemed quite expensive.
Slowing her pace as she approached the parking lot, Harriet
saw a tall figure leaning against the car, gazing at the distant
night sea and smoking a cigarette. She stopped in her tracks.
Staring at the figure for a long moment, Harriet finally called out
to him, “Ellsworth.”
She was surprised, surprised that Ellsworth had come to pick
her up.
Counting carefully, it had been about ten days since they last
saw each other.
This separation felt especially long, as if they hadn’t seen each
other for many, many years.
It was as if… a day apart felt like three autumns.
Beside the black Maybach, hearing Harriet call his name,
Ellsworth suddenly turned around.
Chapter 37
Seeing Harriet coming out, he quickly stubbed out his
unfinished cigarette in the nearby trash can.
The moonlight was clear and bright, stretching their shadows
long and far…
With both hands back in his pockets, Ellsworth greeted her
gently, “All done?”
Gripping the strap of her shoulder bag with her right hand,
Harriet walked toward him and nodded, “Mm, all done.”
As Harriet drew closer, their shadows gradually overlapped.
Ellsworth looked down at her and noticed she had grown
thinner.
Looking up at Ellsworth, Harriet hadn’t had a chance to speak before Ellsworth naturally opened the passenger door for her.
“Let’s go home.”
After not seeing each other for ten days, Ellsworth had also lost some weight, and his eyes looked quite tired.
Seeing how far he had come, and thinking he must have just landed from a business trip, Harriet replied, ‘Okay,‘ and bent
down to get into the car.
Chapter137
As the car drove out of the laboratory park, the waves gently lapped against the rocks. The moonlight and streetlights
illuminated the road ahead, making the suburban night
especially romantic.
With both hands on the steering wheel, Ellsworth glanced at
Harriet, seeing her staring straight ahead. He said lazily,
“Reginald really doesn’t go easy on you guys.”
When Ellsworth spoke to her, Harriet smiled and said, “He’s fine.
It’s just that when it’s your own project team, you have to take
responsibility yourself.”
Harriet’s smile was a bit polite, and her words carried a hint of
distance.
Then she turned to Ellsworth and said, “By the way, Reginald
bought my patent. He said I should thank you.”
Ellsworth smiled nonchalantly and said, “No need for that. I’m
just hoping to make some money later on.”
Hearing Ellsworth say he was in it for the money, Harriet smilec as well, then turned her gaze back to the road ahead.
The car was very quiet, with only the faint sound of the wind
outside.
After a whole day of work, sitting motionless in the pa
seat, Harriet began to doze off without realizing it.
