Chapter127
Chapter127
Now a bit more awake, Harriet looked directly at Ellsworth. She
could smell the jasmine scent from Kelsey on him, and the lively
aroma of the birthday party crowd.
Pulling Ellsworth’s hand away, Harriet avoided his gaze, put her
feet on the floor, slipped on her slippers, and said, “Tomorrow is
Sunday. I’m not going back to Auburn Heights today. If you
have things to do tonight, go ahead and take care of them.”
There were probably still events going on at the Graham’s villa
tonight.
So before Ellsworth could even suggest leaving, Harriet told him
to go.
After all, in these years of marriage, she had long since gotten
used to life without him, and so had her grandfather.
His sudden appearance was unsettling for both her and her
grandfather.
If this had been shortly after they got married, Harriet would have been so happy to see Ellsworth show up like this that she
Chapter127
wouldn’t have been able to sleep, maybe even jumped for joy.
Now… it just didn’t mean much anymore.
As soon as Harriet told him to go take care of his business,
Ellsworth reached out, grabbed her hand, and stood up from the
bed himself.
He said, “What’s going on? Why are you always avoiding me
now?”
Her wrist caught in Ellsworth’s grip, Harriet tried to pull her hand
back, but couldn’t.
Looking up at Ellsworth, she said, “I’m not avoiding you.”
She wasn’t avoiding him; she had just long since gotten used to
life without him.
Holding onto Ellsworth’s hand, Harriet added, “You’re hurting my
hand.”
After Harriet spoke, Ellsworth let go of her hand.
He put his hands back in his pockets and said calmly, “From
now on, I’ll come back with you to visit Grandpa every week.”
Rubbing her reddened wrist, Harriet replied in a flat voice,
Chapter127
“That’s not necessary. Grandpa doesn’t need company, and
when I come back, I don’t really keep him company anyway-I’m
always sleeping.”
Harriet’s rejection made Ellsworth acutely aware of the distance
between them-a distance that felt insurmountable.
He felt that he could never get close to Harriet’s heart again,
never go back to the way things were.
Not even as friends.
He raised his right hand to Harriet’s face; his hand was much
larger than her face.
When Harriet tried to push his hand away, Ellsworth took the
opportunity to press her nape and pull her toward him.
Stumbling, Harriet fell into Ellsworth’s arms, her hands
instinctively pressing against his chest, keeping some distance
between them.
Besides… she didn’t like the scent of Kelsey.
In silent struggle, with Harriet resisting, Ellsworth held her by
the nape and leaned in to kiss her.
Chapter127
Harriet pressed her hands against his chest, turned her face away, and dodged Ellsworth’s kiss.
She didn’t let him kiss her.
Feeling Harriet’s rejection, Ellsworth didn’t push further. He just
looked at her.
He stared down at her for a long while, then slowly exhaled,
lowered his head, and rested his forehead against hers, not
saying a word.
Harriet didn’t speak either, just turned her face slightly, refusing
to give him a chance to kiss her.
After a moment of silence, Ellsworth returned to his usual
nonchalance. He pinched Harriet’s face, made her look at him,
and asked with a smile, “You won’t even let me touch you? Give
me a reason.”
Looking up at Ellsworth, Harriet thought of Jolene’s call at noon
and Kelsey’s Instagram post.
At this moment, even though Ellsworth was right in front of her,
Harriet still felt he didn’t belong to her.
He hadn’t belonged to her before, doesn’t belong to her now,
Chapter127
and never will.
She didn’t mention Voyage Group acquisition or bring up
Kelsey’s Instagram post. Harriet just looked at him and said,
word by word, “I don’t like you. I don’t want to be close to you.”
Don’t like him? Don’t want to be close to him?
Hearing Harriet’s reason, Ellsworth couldn’t help but laugh in
exasperation.
Letting go of Harriet’s face, Ellsworth put both hands back in his
pockets, turned to the side and laughed twice, then turned back
to look at Harriet and said, amused, “You don’t like me, you
won’t let me touch you, yet you married me?”
Harriet’s expression didn’t change: “That’s why I want a
.divorce.”
Harriet’s calmness and bluntness left Ellsworth with nothing to
say.
In the end, he just looked at Harriet with a wry smile and said,
“Harriet, you really do whatever you want, don’t you?”
Harriet replied coolly, “Sorry for wasting a few years of your
time.”
Chapter127
Seeing Harriet’s indifferent attitude, Ellsworth just looked at her,
unable to laugh or get angry.
After staring at her for a while, Ellsworth suddenly took his right
hand out of his pocket, pinched her face, and pulled her back
toward him: “So after all this, you think a simple ‘sorry’ is
enough?”
