Chapter 9

Scott finally couldn’t bear to watch any longer, trembling fingers pausing the video.

The screen froze on that cold heart monitor.

Tears silently trailed down Scott’s face, dripping onto the floor.

He murmured, voice nearly gone.

“How could you really be gone… You wouldn’t die!”

“Pamela, are you punishing me? Is this some twisted revenge for my cruel words?”

Exhausted, Scott slumped back onto the sofa.

His gaze lingered on Pamela’s flatlined heartbeat displayed on the monitor.

Scott’s brow furrowed, eyelids growing heavy.

The next day, an unknown number jolted him awake.

He snapped to full alertness.

Could it be Pamela?

Scott answered, hearing a woman’s voice.

The light in his eyes instantly dimmed.

Kim… not Pamela.

Kim’s laughter carried through the line: “Scott, long time no see. Heard you’re back with Blood Pack.”

Scott’s voice rasped from sleeplessness: “Yeah, been a while.”

He wished he could say those same words to Pamela.

Car horns bled through Kim’s voice: “Glad you’re doing well now. After all, I had a crush on you all through high school…”

Her tone softened, Pamela’s memory surfacing.

“But I wasn’t the one who loved you longest… Pamela was.”

“I knew you two grew up together-childhood sweethearts. Always knew she was the one you really wanted.”

“Even after that senior year accident… you still cared.”

“I could tell she loved you too.”

Kim sighed, nostalgia heavy in her pause.

“What a waste… you two.”

Kim’s call dragged Scott into the past.

He’d always known Pamela’s feelings.

He’d always known they’d wasted ten years.

By noon, Scott followed Pamela’s faintly mentioned clue to her mom’s ancestral home, Moon Pack.

If the package came from there, she must be living safely nearby.

Just seeing her alive-that’s all he needed.

But at the destination, only Anna greeted him.

Time had etched silver into Anna’s temples since he last saw her.

Surprise flickered across Anna’s face at Scott’s sudden appearance.

She ushered him inside, offering water with motherly warmth.

“Too many years have passed.”

Her eyes held the gentle concern reserved for children she’d watched grow.

Scott’s attention snagged on a white photo frame in the living room-Pamela’s radiant smile frozen in time.

He stared, momentarily lost, before cradling the cup with both hands.

“You and Pamela shared a birth year.” Anna’s voice thickened, eyes glistening as she forced a smile. “If she were here… she’d be your age now.”

Her clouded gaze seemed to look through him, searching for another’s ghost.

Scott felt a sharp tug at his heart upon hearing this.

He couldn’t grasp what Anna meant-how could Pamela “still be here”?

This must be some act they’d rehearsed together!

He clenched his jaw, swallowing his emotions.

“Auntie, where’s Pamela?

I need to speak with her.”

Anna froze, staring at him wordlessly.

Impatience flared in Scott as he shot up, eyes locking onto a closed bedroom door. He marched over: “Pamela! Are you hiding in here?”

The door burst open, revealing Pamela’s memorial portrait staring back from the room.
