Chapter 27

Scott’s neck veins bulged violently as he doubled over in agony.

An overwhelming grief crushed his chest, stealing his breath!

His eyes burned crimson, tears welling uncontrollably as he instinctively sought the tombstone-needing one last glimpse of that photo.

Just then. Pamela grasped his arm, her eyes clouded with worry. “Don’t look. Let’s go rest.”

Scott hesitated, then nodded weakly.

Only when Pamela guided him back to the car did the anguish begin to fade.

He drew a shuddering breath, steadying himself before murmuring, “Did I scare you just now?”

“I don’t know what came over me…”

Pamela offered a gentle smile. “It’s alright.”

Rain lashed against the windows as they returned home.

Pamela settled on the sofa, guiding Scott’s head onto her lap. Her fingertips traced soothing circles on his temples, easing his tension.

Scott’s breathing gradually deepened, eyelids growing heavy until sleep claimed him.

In his dream, he drifted back to their high school days-a detached observer watching the scene unfold.

Pamela stood encircled by Kim and her tormentors, enduring their taunts and shoves.

And Scott? He stood coldly aside, a silent spectator.

Suddenly, the bullies vanished. Only Pamela remained, her gaze locking onto him.

The perspective shifted violently-first-person now.

He watched Pamela’s face drain of color as she clutched her chest, sinking to her knees.

Her eyes, glistening with betrayal, lifted to his.

“Why didn’t you help me back then?” she choked out, voice trembling. “I’m already dead!”

An invisible vise seized Scott’s heart, suffocating him.

He strained to explain, to beg forgiveness-but his body refused to move.

Chapter 27

Pamela’s tears ignited into raw hatred. “Scott Brown! I hate you! Never want to see you again!”

–

Scott jolted awake, gasping.

Tears welled up reflexively as he struggled to breathe.

He scanned the living room, then the kitchen-no sign of Pamela.

“Pamela? Pamela Garcia!”

He tore through every room, desperation mounting.

Nothing.

Just as doubt threatened to consume him, he spotted her in the rain-drenched courtyard.

Scott sprinted outside, crushing her into his embrace.

“Why didn’t you answer me?” he demanded, voice raw with terror.

Pamela tapped his back, signaling discomfort. He loosened his grip instantly.

“Sorry, I-” he stammered, eyes downcast.

But Pamela drew him close, her hand rubbing calming circles on his back.

“I didn’t hear you,” she murmured. “What’s wrong?”

Collecting himself, Scott exhaled raggedly. “Nothing Just a nightmare.”

Then he asked, “Why did you suddenly come out to the yard

Pamela pointed innocently at Ginger Tabby playing nearby. “It slipped out when I wasn’t looking. I was just keeping it company.”

Scott glanced at Ginger Tabby, his expression softening

When his gaze returned to her, he looked at the engagement ring on Pamela’s finger and said slowly,

“Pamela, let’s tie the knot tomorrow!”
