Chapter 13
Scott’s guilt deepened at her words, aching for her more intensely.
He promised: “I won’t let those bad things happen again.”
Pulling candy from his pocket, Scott offered it to Pamela.
He knew sugar comforted her during low moments-his habitual gesture.
Yet Pamela dodged his extended hand without taking it.
Catching his confusion, she shook her head in explanation.
“I’ve outgrown my candy habit.”
Her visible withdrawal stabbed Scott’s heart.
Though claiming no resentment, her instincts betrayed everything.
Was she rejecting his closeness…?
She should blame him… rightfully so.
Scott forced a smile, pocketing the failed comfort.
His eyes dimmed, throat bobbing: “Habits change… after all these years.”
Collecting himself, he stood: “Rest here. I’ll prepare the guest room.”
Pamela followed instead of waiting.
When she moved to help, Scott worried: “Your health-”
་་
Her soft laugh cut in: “I’m not that fragile.”
Her effortless independence stunned Scott, hollowing his chest.
He remembered her childhood dependence due to frail health.
High school had severed that reliance.
Did she need him at all now…?
Reading his thoughts, Pamela reassured: “I’m fine, really.”
“This Pamela handles things differently.”

Scott’s smile strained.
“You’ve grown fiercely independent this decade.”
Despite her willingness to reconnect, Scott sensed unspoken blame.
She must still resent him.
At the boutique, a clerk enthusiastically showcased designs.
Suddenly, a striking young woman entered, beclining toward Scott with her phone.
“Excuse me… could I get your contact?”
Scott instinctively checked Pamela’s reaction.
Amused silence played on her lips-a spectator’s smirk.
Chuckling helplessly, Scott gestured toward Pamela:
“Sorry. My heart’s taken.”
“…for years now.”
The woman glanced between them, confused, then retreated.
Scott flushed at his own admission.
Pamela merely smiled: “Funny coincidence, Scott.”
“I’ve loved someone too… for years.”
