Chapter 5 

My phone vibrated so violently it started to match my heartbeat, and the person on the other end was panicking, 

“Ms. Joyner, Nathan just got into a car accident. Can you come back?!” I thought this might be some crude scam. 

I had already thought it through-if he dared to lie to me about something like this, I would definitely slap him twice. 

Force him to break up with me, then leave without looking back. 

But on the way to the airport, his parents called too. 

“Adeline, we’re begging you. If Nathan really did something wrong, we definitely won’t let him off the hook once he recovers, but when they wheeled him into the operating room, he kept calling your name… There was so much blood, we’re really scared…” 

Even my friends were urging me for once. 

“There was a heavy rainstorm at dawn. Your housekeeper said he took the car keys and left around three in the morn- ing, looking extremely angry… 

“I asked his assistant. He said Nathan went racing on the mountain road, skidded on the wet pavement, and crashed into the guardrail. The doctors can’t say what his condition is right now…. 

“Adeline, this is a matter of life and death. Maybe you should come back.” 

Three in the morning-exactly after I sent him that message. My legs went weak, and I collapsed in the waiting area, completely drained of strength. 

When I first left, those few hours of flight time felt way too fast. 

Now I was on pins and needles, wishing I could rush to the cockpit and tell the pilot to fly even faster. 

When the plane landed and I received the “surgery successful” message, I crouched on the ground and broke down crying. When I agreed to be with Nathan, my friend had teased me. “Nathan’s got you wrapped around his finger for life.” 

I wasn’t unattractive. Before dating Nathan, quite a few people had pursued me. 

I could have easily found someone with good prospects who treated me well. 

But I couldn’t do it. None of those people was Nathan, so I didn’t want to date them. 

When he asked me out, I had already made up my mind. 

Even if I had to live in Genevieve’s shadow forever, I wanted to take a chance for myself.

Just because he was the person I had liked for so many years, I was willing to take the risk for once.

My eyes were red and swollen from crying. When I got to the hospital, there weren’t many people outside the ward. 

Nathan’s parents had been quite shaken, and my mom had convinced them to rest. Now, only Davin and a hospital aide were there. 

When Davin saw me, it was like seeing his savior. This grown man nearly burst into tears. “You’re finally back… fi- nally back…” 

Davin told me that when Nathan saw the papers to break off the engagement that day, he flew into a rage. 

He immediately had Davin investigate my whereabouts over the past few days. 

When he found out I hadn’t gone to work for several days and had ended up in the hospital, he was so angry he didn’t cat anything. 

“When he couldn’t reach you, he drove around the whole city looking for you. When he got your flight information, that was the first time I ever saw him cry…. 

“He called me to drink with him and told me to think carefully about anything unusual I’d been doing lately. When he got emotional, he lay on the table like a child, saying you were heartless, saying you didn’t want him anymore. Hon- estly, I’ve worked for Nathan for so many years, and this was the first time I’d seen him like this. 

“Later, I had someone investigate and found out about Genevieve. We saw those posts… I swear on my life, Nathan is innocent! 

“The photos were taken by body doubles she hired, and Nathan had no idea about that message! 

“And the phone-she stole it when Mr. Powell wasn’t paying attention and deleted the chat records!” 

Davin spoke with righteous indignation, so emotional that his glasses shook.
