Chapter 24

In the past, Isabella and Harper had been good friends. When Isabella wanted to perform, Harper had specially ar- ranged for her to make an appearance at her piano recital. When Isabella wanted to fit in with the social circle, Harper had introduced her around. Harper had given Isabella everything she wanted.

But after Harper was sent away, when she sought help from Isabella, she made excuses and refused.

The warmth and coldness of human relationships were laid bare in times of hardship.

“I’m really fine,” Harper said, her back to the cubicle door. As she was about to change her top, the curtain was pulled open. Isabella stood at the entrance, opening her mouth as if to say something, but then suddenly stopped.

In the narrow yet bright cubicle, the first thing that caught Isabella’s eye was Harper’s bare back. Her back used to be smooth and fair, with beautifully shaped bone lines, like a natural piece of jade growing on her body, perfect for wearing backless evening gowns.

But now, her back was covered in scars, red and brown, some irregular, like cracks on a piece of jade, uneven and disfiguring.

Harper realized what had happened and quickly closed the curtain. Her hands trembled as she put on her clothes, and tears fell uncontrollably.

She had hidden them so well, but now they were all exposed. The pain of the past three years was all over her back. What was she going to do now?

She walked out anxiously, wanting to explain to Isabella, but she was no longer in the locker room.-

Mason arrived at Frehowi House in the evening. This place was a property of the Brooks family, and he was the ma- jority shareholder. He had come to inspect it.

Michael, using his own identity, checked in and handed the room card to Mason in the car, “You can go straight up. I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”

As Mason stepped out of the elevator, Isabella was waiting there. She waved, “Mason.”

A hint of irritation crept onto his brow. Mason walked past her and kept going straight. Over the past three years, Is- abella seemed to have learned Harper’s tricks. “I knew you’d come at this time. Haven’t eaten yet, right? There are still seats in the restaurant downstairs.”

“Get out of the way,”

Isabella smiled and moved from his left to his right, “Come on.”

Mason acted as if he hadn’t heard.

“By the way, I ran into Harper,” Isabella carefully observed Mason’s micro-expressions. He remained as still as a

mountain, unperturbed.

His face was indifferent, but there was definitely a ripple in his heart.

After walking a few more steps, Mason finally asked, “Why is she here? What bad luck.”

“Why do you speak of her like that?” Isabella laughed, but her smile wasn’t very kind. “She seems to have changed at lot this time, but she still hasn’t lost that arrogant attitude. When I talked to her, she ignored me.”

This sounded grating no matter how you heard it.

Mason gave an indifferent response, “If I ignore you, am I arrogant too?”

Isabella’s smile froze for a moment, and she quickly tried to make up for it, “You’re different from her. She’s not the Walker family’s daughter anymore. Without that status, she’s nothing compared to anyone else.”

They were almost in the room, and Mason was eager to get rid of Isabella, but she followed closely, and her words came even faster, “And you know what? I saw Harper changing clothes in the locker room. Her back is covered in scars. I really don’t know what she’s been up to these past few years.”

“What are you saying?” Mason thought she was joking, “Scars?”

No matter what, Harper had Ava protecting her. After she was sent away, Ava often had Liam check on her. How could she have been beaten?

Isabella looked bewildered, “Yes, I did. I saw them with my eyes. They were all scars, quite alarming.”

“Are you not hungry?”

Harper didn’t touch the food on her plate. Isabella noticed this and became restless. James called out to her twice be- fore she snapped out of it and put some food in her mouth.
