Chapter 19 

Suddenly standing up, Mason’s face darkened to the extreme. He didn’t know what he was so annoyed about, “So you just like to suffer?” 

No matter what, this engagement was out of the question. 

Ava confronted the Bennett family that very day and demanded a personal apology from Noah. Harper was taken back home, and even hiding in her room, she could hear the quarrels between Ava and Liam. 

Liam was extremely angry. He stormed upstairs, slammed the door, and his chest heaved violently. He couldn’t think of anyone else who would marry Harper. 

While he was still fuming, a work call came in. 

Focusing his attention, he saw it was from James. 

After a brief moment of contemplation, Liam had his candidate. 

It had been a week since coming down from the villa. Ethan had been hiding at Mason’s place for a few days. Mason had been busy finalizing the payments for several year-end projects and had only just returned to the branch office. 

The elevator ascended from the basement level. 

Mason looked down and saw the elevator doors slowly open. When he looked up, he saw Harper smiling, but the smile wasn’t for him; it was for James. 

Both of them paused. 

Seeing him, Harper’s smile faded, and she lowered her head. 

James was Liam’s most capable assistant, having worked at Walker Group for many years and knowing Harper from a long time ago. Mason had personally witnessed Harper giving James a gift. Under the moonlight, with his ears turn- ing red, James had said, “My birthday, Miss still remembers” 

Pausing slightly, James reached out to block the elevator doors. His smile didn’t reach his eyes; it seemed friendly but was actually heavy, “Mr. Brooks, aren’t you getting in?” 

In the quiet space, every breath seemed amplified several times. 

Standing in the corner, Harper was shielded by James. She didn’t spare another glance at Mason; the person she was 

close to now was James. 

Once inside the elevator, Mason’s assistant finally noticed Harper 

The silence was shattered by a surprised exclamation to Miss Sullivan.

Harper looked up timidly, meeting the gaze of Michael, the assistant. 

“Is it really you?” 

When she was pursuing Mason, Harper had often relied on Michael to deliver gifts and messages If it weren’t for the lingering traces of her past appearance, he might not have recognized her. “When did you return to Moridise?” 

“A few days ago” 

The elevator continued to ascend. 

It reached the twenty-sixth floor. 

James interrupted the old friends’ conversation, “Harper, we’re here.” 

Harper followed closely behind him, becoming an appendage to someone else. Mason’s gaze followed them until the elevator doors closed. 

“Mr. Brooks, was that really Miss Sullivan? She’s changed so much; I almost didn’t recognize her.” 

The assistant’s words came one after another, increasing Mason’s irritation. What had changed? She was still the same-throwing herself at any man she saw. She did it with Noah, and she did it with James, but not with him. 

What did James think he was doing? 

The idea that he could even attempt to get close to Harper was absurd. 

Michael exclaimed again, “She looks very different, but the strangest thing is that she didn’t speak to you. She used to follow you everywhere because she liked you so much. What happened just now?” 

“I don’t need a love-struck admirer who doesn’t know her place. It does me no good.” 

“But Miss Sullivan, it’s clear to all of us that she genuinely likes you.” 

They arrived at their floor. 

Mason suddenly emphasized his words, “Liking someone can lead to someone’s death.” 

He was referring to Olivia. 

That wonderful woman, untainted by any desire or impure thoughts, had been kind and friendly, teaching Harper the violin and treating her like a younger sister. Yet Harper had hired thugs to kidnap her, leading to Olivia’s fatal fall from a building. 

No matter how pitiful Harper was, she couldn’t compare to the tragic loss of Olivia’s life. 

Michael touched the back of his neck, quickly following Mason out and blurting out, “Mr. Brooks, Miss Sullivan has interacted with me quite a bit. She doesn’t seem like the type to do something like that.”
