Chapter 45.
Rosalind suddenly became alert:”You didn’t do anything to Vernon, did you?”
Christopher’s expression immediately darkened:”So it really was for him?”
“Seriously, what’s with your comprehension skills?”
“Sorry, my wife hasn’t been behaving lately, so I have to be on guard against everyone.”
“Then why aren’t you on guard against Eugene?”
At this, Christopher’s hands paused, and his gaze fell again on the pair of black high heels.
“These shoes… what brand are they?”
The interview had been rushed, so Rosalind just bought a random pair online for convenience. She hadn’t even noticed the brand.
He bent down, turned the shoe over, and looked at the logo on the sole.
“Chanel?”
He raised an eyebrow, “No wonder your feet hurt. You don’t even buy good shoes, just wear a pair of knockoffs.”
As he was speaking, someone called out to him from not far away: “Christopher!”
Eugene arrived alone, plopping down next to him, slinging an arm around his shoulders and patting him like old buddies:”I ditched a beauty to come meet you, so you owe me at least three drinks tonight.”
Christopher asked suspiciously, “Where’s your girlfriend?”
“Oh, she’s shy. Next time.”
Christopher suddenly smiled, but there was a sharp edge to it:”Is she shy, or does she not exist at all?”
Eugene’s hand holding the glass paused slightly:”What do you mean?”
Christopher hooked the black high heel on the floor with his finger: “I noticed something interesting. When I saw you and your girlfriend in the elevator today, the high heels she was wearing were exactly the same as Rosa’s.”
Eugene continued drinking as if nothing had happened, taking a light sip and squinting with a smile:”What’s so strange about that? There are only so many styles of women’s high heels. It’s not surprising if they have the same pair.”
“Really?”
Eugene suddenly turned his eyes to Rosalind:”Ms. Johansen, will you have a drink with me?”
Rosalind looked at him with disgust:”Get lost.”
Eugene said to Christopher, “See? She won’t even have a drink with me. Do you really think she’d let me put my arm around her? You know her temper. She’d have punched me in the face by now.”
With that, he acted as if nothing had happened and continued drinking.
Christopher pondered for a moment, as if weighing the truth of his words.
19:43
The disgust Rosalind had just shown toward Eugene was clearly genuine, and since Eugene had arrived, he had barely glanced at Rosalind.
He was probably just overthinking things.
Black patent leather stilettos-maybe Eugene’s woman was wearing authentic Chanel, while Rosalind’s were
knockoffs.
He really was being ridiculous. These two had been at odds for over a decade, always bickering like cats and dogs whenever they met. How could there possibly be anything ambiguous between them?
Christopher shook his head and gave a self-deprecating laugh.
Eugene asked him, “What are you laughing at?”
“Laughing at how jumpy I’ve become, seeing threats everywhere.”
“I saw the trending topic,” Eugene said. “I’ve already had someone take it down, but I think you should really think things through. On one hand, you have a peaceful life with your wife and kid, on the other, a stubborn girl who’s like a piece of tough old taffy. You should choose carefully.”
Rosalind immediately bristled:”You’re the taffy! Your whole family is taffy!”
Eugene raised an eyebrow:”Look at you now. If that’s not being stubborn like taffy that can’t be pulled apart, what is?”
Christopher frowned and interrupted, “Alright, can you two get along for even five minutes?”
Eugene snorted lightly, “She started it.”
Rosalind shot back immediately, “Mr. Benitez, do you think ‘taffy’ is an insult? If it is, you were the one who called me that first.”
Eugene spread his hands:”Christopher, I really don’t get it. How did your jealousy end up directed at me? It’s beyond me.”
Christopher clinked glasses with him:”Sorry, things have been hectic lately. I’m a bit on edge. Don’t take it personally.”
Just then, Eugene got a WhatsApp video call.
He smiled and answered, “Awake now?”
A gentle female voice came from the other end:”Mm, still so sleepy. Did you go out?”
“Just having a few drinks with the guys. If you’re awake, call room service. I asked them to make you some porridge.”
