Chapter 40.
Rosalind grew alert. “What do mean?”
you
Eugene’s voice dropped. “Nothing. Just think about it.”
She received a text message.
It was from the bank. Twenty million dollars had been deposited into her account.
That was fast.
Eugene noticed it too and was about to say something when his phone rang.
The caller ID read “Mad Dog.”
“Mad Dog? Who’s that?” Rosalind thought.
Eugene picked up the phone.”Christopher?”
Rosalind froze. Eugene’s contact for Christopher was “Mad Dog?”
For a moment, she couldn’t tell if the term was meant as a compliment or an insult.
Christopher’s voice came through the phone. “Eugene, sorry to bother you at this hour, but there’s something I need your help with. Are you free to talk?”
Eugene glanced at Rosalind before turning away and heading toward the bedroom. “Isn’t it a little late for you to be asking? I could always hang up. What’s the issue?”
“Rosalind and that old pervert’s photos somehow made it to the top of the trending list. I need them taken down fast, and…” He paused, his voice lowering.”Find out who did it.”
Eugene didn’t respond right away. Instead, he asked, “Are you sure you want to find out?”
“Yeah, anyone who tries to hurt Rosa should
pay
the price.”
‘Christopher, I suggest you think carefully.”
“Are you trying to stop me?”
“I’m not wasting my time stopping you. I’m just reminding you, you probably already know who it is. And once the truth is out, what are you going to do about it?”
On the other end of the line, there was a long silence.
Those photos had been locked down years ago.
Only Eugene, Christopher, and his parents had copies.
Christopher didn’t take part in it himself. Eugene wouldn’t stoop to doing this, so it was clear who was behind the
leak.
Even if they found out who did it, Christopher might just let it go.
Eugene added, “By the way, what about Latoya… what’s your plan for her?”
Christopher’s voice sounded tired. “I spoke with the doctor. Latoya’s health is fragile. If she terminates this
pregnancy,
she might never be able to have children again. She got caught up in this mess, and… I don’t know what to do…”
“So, you’ve decided to let her keep the baby, then?” Eugene asked, his voice cold.
He put the phone on speaker, clearly allowing Rosalind to hear.
Christopher’s voice echoed through the room.”Eugene, find me someone reliable. Once the baby’s born, I want them to raise it. Money, a house-whatever they need. But as for Rosa… please, make sure she believes the baby’s been terminated.”
Eugene glanced at Rosalind, a wicked smile tugging at his lips as he spoke into the phone.”Got it. I’ll let you know.”
When he hung up, Eugene shook his phone at Rosalind. “Ms. Johansen, heard all that? What do you think?”
‘Congratulations, Mr. Benitez. Now, you don’t even need a surrogate. You’ve got a ready-made kid from Christopher,” she said bitterly.
‘Sounds like you’re doing alright, though.”
At this point, there was no point in being sad. There was nothing left to do but keep moving forward.
After 15 years of love, it wasn’t easy for her not to feel hurt.
But reality was what it was.
Rosalind blinked, her eyes steely with determination.”I have to move on.”
