Austin looked at me, his eyes darkening. Don’t be ridiculous.”

I gave a small smile. It’s fine. I can’t rely on you forever.”

Over the years, because of Austin, I’d actually picked up a lot of ways to make money.

I’d managed to save up some cash and even opened a separate bank account, transferring a little bit into it each month, planning to pay Austin back someday.

Of course, he didn’t know any of this.

As I spoke, I transferred the money to the others.

Austin had won the most. He stared at his phone for a long moment before letting out a soft snort and accepting the

payment.

Well, look at you, Miley. Growing up, huh?”

A while later, I went to the restroom. On my way out, I happened to catch Austin and Ruth arguing in the hallway.

I thought you said Evan would be here. So, where is he?Ruth snapped.

He got held up. What, you still haven’t given up on him? You’ve been chasing him foreverhas he ever even looked your way?”

She scoffed. So what? I do what I want. But youwhy do you keep that Miley girl around?”

Austin fixed his gaze on her. Jealous?”

Hardly. I just can’t stand women like her, always mooching off others like a leech. She must have spent a fortune of yours over the years, right?”

Austin rubbed his nose.

I’m just trying to get back at you. If you’d give up on Evan and get back together with me, I’d cut Miley off in a heartbeat, never speak to her again.”

The hallway lights were dim, and I stood in the shadows, my heart suddenly turning icecold.

I didn’t listen any further. Instead, I slipped away in the opposite direction, taking a moment to collect myself before heading back.

When I pushed open the door, the private room was already empty.

I stepped outside and realized it was pouring rain.

Chapter 3

Gavin, who’d gone out to throw up earlier, hadn’t left yet. He saw me and paused, surprised.

You’re still here? Oh, Austin just left to take Ruth home.

It’s pouring, and this place is literally in the middle of nowhere. But we’re not going the same direction…

How about you wait a bit? I’ll call Austin and have him swing back to get you.”

I shook my head. Don’t bother.”

Gavin sighed, not pressing further, and ushered his date into the car.

I instantly regretted not driving myself tonight.

Pulling out my phone, I tried to call a ride, but no one answered.

I checked the map and saw there was a bus stop not too far away. Steeling myself, I braved the rain and headed for the gate.

I’d only taken a few steps when an umbrella appeared over my head.

A moment later, I heard a low, distant voicejust as cold and aloof as the rumors said.

Miley.”
