r 169 Unable to Face the Truth
“Curtis!” Sonya shuddered and hid behind him. At that moment, he was the only one who could protect her. “Help me, Curtis!”
“Chloe, even if you want to take it out on Sonya, two punches should be more than enough!” Curtis said, enduring the pain in his chest.
“Enough?” Chloe’s gaze gleamed mockingly. “So many people died. Daniel has been missing for five years. Curtis, do you think two punches are enough?”
Curtis was at a loss for words. At that moment, he didn’t dare to look Chloe in the eye.
“Get lost!” Chloe barked.
Curtis gritted his teeth and said, “Back when Sonya saved me, I swore that I would protect her. If you hit her, I will never let you off the hook.”
At that, he was kicked to the ground. This time, it was Brian who kicked him.
Brian stepped on his face and roared, “Then, I’ll come after
you
first!”
Curtis was in pain. He tried hard to push Brian off him, but it was as if the latter’s leg was made of steel. He couldn’t get it to budge.
“Chloe, if you really want to take Sonya’s life, I’ll help you,” Brian said to Chloe.
Sonya looked horrified. She knew that Brian was different from Chloe. Even if Chloe hit her, she wouldn’t want to kill her. However, it was a different story when it came to a madman like
Brian.
Sonya instinctively tried to escape, but Brian’s bodyguards grabbed her so she couldn’t move.
Right at that moment, a car stopped right in front of them. Ethan and Lena stepped out of the vehicle with another man whose hands were tied.
Brian took his foot off Curtis and looked at Ethan with furrowed brows.
Curtis struggled to his feet, looking disheveled. But Brian immediately pressed down on his shoulder, making him immobile, just like Sonya.
Sonya glared at Peter with a pale face.
Why would Ethan and Lena bring Peter over? He should have been arrested by the police and locked up.
Lena quickly walked over to Chloe and asked, “Chloe, what’s going on?”
“I found evidence to prove that Sonya started the fire at the border. If it hadn’t been for that
Chable to Face the high
fire, Daniel wouldn’t have gone missing,” Chloe replied.

Lena could guess what had happened even without Chloe explaining further. She knew how important Daniel was to Chloe.
Ethan kicked Peter from behind. “Aren’t you going to say hello? You and Sonya are so close that you two even shared the same hotel room.”
“A hotel room?” Curtis was bewildered. “Sonya, you and Peter…”
“He’s lying!” Sonya denied vehemently. “Curtis, I don’t know this man at all. Chloe must be colluding with him and trying to frame me-”
“Sonya Miller, you hag! You’re the one trying to frame me!” Peter spat angrily.
“You agreed to give me 50 million. What happened in the end? Once I received the money, you called the cops on me, saying that I’d extorted you! If I hadn’t escaped quickly, I would’ve been locked up!”
But it wasn’t like his current predicament was any better. Although he’d escaped the police officer’s clutches, he’d been caught by Ethan and brought here.
Since Sonya had tried to throw him under the bus, he wasn’t going to let her get off the hook so easily either.
“50 million? Police? Extortion?” Curtis was perplexed. “Sonya, what’s going on? I thought you didn’t have any money. Where did you get the money for Peter?”
“I–I…”
Before Sonya could come up with a response, Curtis suddenly seemed to recall something.‘ Don’t tell me… Is the 50 million the money I borrowed? You told me that your uncle needed proof of funds and that the money would be frozen for a week or so. C–Could it be…”
“1
At that thought, Curtis started to sweat buckets. If that money hadn’t been frozen and Sonya had given it to Peter instead, then had his attempt to salvage Green Tech all been for nothing?
“P–Peter was blackmailing me, so I transferred the money to his account. But it’s extortion, so he won’t have the money for long. The police will return the money to us. You won’t suffer any losses!” Sonya replied anxiously.
She’d planned it all. She’d first wired the money to Peter, then called the police so that they could arrest him. Then, as long as she could prove that Peter had been blackmailing her, the police would naturally return the money to her.
She’d never imagined that Ethan would completely foil her plan.
“What? You just said that you don’t know this man. So, now you know him?” Ethan said mockingly.
Sonya was at a complete loss for words.
Curtis looked at her with a complicated gaze. “Peter is blackmailing you? What does he have on you that you need to give him such a huge amount of money?”
From what he could remember, there was nothing that could link Peter and Sonya together.
Wait a minute… There was one thing linking them together. Curtis had hired Peter to help him find out who had rescued him.
And Peter had told him that the person who’d rescued him was indeed Sonya. If Peter had lied to him…
Curtis didn’t dare to imagine what might have happened. The truth would destroy him.
Peter had nothing left to lose since he’d ended up without the money and in such a terrible situation, all thanks to Sonya. He wasn’t going to let her off easily.
“What else could it be? It’s because this wench here isn’t the one who saved your life! She’s only pretending to be your savior. She didn’t want me to tell you the truth, so she paid me 50 million to keep my mouth shut!” Peter said.
Sonya pretended to stay calm and said, “Curtis, Peter must have been bought off by Chloe. You believe me, right?”
Curtis gulped. He looked past Sonya, right at Chloe. If the person who saved him wasn’t Sonya
“Chloe, y–you.. you didn’t save me, right?” he asked, his voice trembling.
Chloe sneered. “Curtis, do you know how pathetic you are right now? You thought Sonya saved your life, so you wanted to repay her. You treated her like a lover and betrayed our marriage because of her.
“Even when you knew she had made a mistake, you still protected her. If she wasn’t the one who saved you, how would you treat her then?”
“No. Sonya is the one who saved me! She’s my savior!” Curtis muttered.
“Well, we can test this out,” Brian suddenly said.
He went forward and grabbed Sonya by the neck. Dragging her over to the edge of the
riverbank, he said, “We just need to throw her into the river to find out if she’s the one who rescued you.”
