Sonya and the other two immediately spotted Chloe and her group. Their expressions shifted slightly before Joanne strode over first.
“Chloe, why is it that I run into you everywhere?” Joanne sneered.
Chloe gave her a cool glance. “I was just wondering the same thing. I’m surprised you still have the time to shop. Then again, after the trial, you probably won’t be shopping anymore.”
“You want to see my mom and me in jail, don’t you? Too bad for you, you miscalculated. Curtis hired an excellent lawyer. My mom and I will be just fine,” Joanne said smugly.
“Ha! Only a fool would be that naive.” Lena scoffed. “You and your mother lured Chloe to that hotel room and even paid someone to drug her. Your faces were shown for everyone to see on that big screen in the hotel! What kind of third–rate lawyer told you that you’ll be fine?”
Joanne was left speechless.
Helen stepped forward and snapped, “Watch your mouth! My son is wealthy. Why would he ever need to hire a third–rate lawyer?”
“Wealthy?” Lena let out a mocking laugh. Everyone in the industry knew Green Tech was drowning in financial trouble.
“If
your son has any money at all, it’s only because Chloe earned it for him. Without her, how much do you think he’d be worth?”
Helen shot back furiously, “Chloe? What talent does she even have? My son’s success is entirely his own! It’s a blessing he divorced her. Now he has Sonya, and only a captain like Sonya is truly worthy of being my daughter–in–law!”
“Captain?” Lena sneered, laughing even harder. “Who knows how long Sonya will even have that title?”
Sonya frowned. “Chloe, no matter what, you shouldn’t let your friend accuse me like this!”
“I wouldn’t call it an accusation,” Chloe replied evenly. “The Cloudrion fire department’s investigation report should be out soon. Want to bet on whether you’ll still be captain once the results are released?”
A flicker of guilt crossed Sonya’s eyes.
Joanne and Helen, however, looked completely lost. “What investigation report?”
Sonya’s gaze darted away. “It’s nothing. Don’t listen to her nonsense.”
From that, Chloe quickly surmised Joanne and Helen probably had no idea about Sonya’s

failure to help Bernard when he’d burned to death.

It made sense. Even though the news had gone viral, Joanne wasn’t the type to keep up with current events. Her world revolved around shopping and buying cosmetics, clothes, and
handbags.
Helen, on the other hand, spent most of her time glued to TV shows or video calling relatives
to brag.
Aside from that, she barely touched her phone except for the occasional call or text.
“Nonsense? Sonya, you watched your colleague burn to death and admitted during a live broadcast that you refused to help. Do you really think you can still be a captain?” Lena pressed.
Sonya’s expression froze.
Just then, Curtis‘ voice cut in sharply. “Even if Sonya really stood by and did nothing, she was only trying to protect herself in a moment of crisis. Her colleague’s death was just bad luck, so stop slandering her.”
“Is that so?” Chloe’s gaze turned icy as she fixed her eyes on Sonya. “Do you really believe she was just standing by? Are you saying her colleague’s death had nothing to do with her?”
Sonya’s heart lurched. Her eyes flickered as she retorted, “Chloe, what are you implying? That I’m guilty? If I were, wouldn’t the police have already arrested me?”
Chloe studied her face with quiet intensity. “Maybe the police will come for you soon.”
A shiver ran through Sonya as her chest tightened. It felt as though Chloe knew something.
But that was impossible. She couldn’t know.
After all, no one else had been there at the time.
Sonya steadied herself, lifting her chin with defiance. “Chloe, slandering me only proves how pathetically jealous you are! I’ve lived an honorable life. The police don’t arrest good people without reason.”
“A good person? Do you really think you qualify?” Chloe sneered.
Curtis frowned. “Chloe, how can you speak about Sonya like that?”
“As expected, you really have no manners!” Helen said with contempt. “Thank goodness my son divorced you!”
“Exactly! Sonya takes us shopping for designer clothes and handbags. You were married for three years and only ever bought us and Mom cheap trinkets, acting as if they were priceless treasures!” Joanne chimed in.
“Then take it up with your brother,” Chloe retorted. “Back then, he thought a 200–dollar ring was a treasure and insisted on using it as our wedding ring.”
Curtis‘ face instantly flushed with humiliation.
Helen’s expression darkened, and she raised her hand to strike Chloe. “You shameless bitch! How dare you insult my son like that?”
But Chloe grabbed Helen’s hand and shoved it aside without the slightest hint of courtesy.
Helen clutched her wrist and shrieked, “You bitch! You’ve hurt me! I’m calling the police! You assaulted an elderly woman!”
Chloe simply watched her theatrics with an icy stare.
Curtis‘ voice rumbled low. “Chloe, apologize to my mom right now.”
Chloe shot back, “Your mother came at me first. I don’t see why I should apologize.”
“Even so, she’s an elder,” Curtis said, frowning. “So what if she said a few harsh words or laid a hand on you? Can’t you just endure it?”
“Ha!” Lena, who’d been watching, suddenly burst out laughing. “That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard! Curtis, you and Chloe are divorced. Why on earth should she put up with anything from you?”
“Even if they’re divorced, Mrs. Green is still an elder,” Sonya said. “Chloe, how can you talk back to someone older than you? If it were me, even if Mrs. Green scolded me or even slapped me, I would’ve still given in.”
Helen’s face finally softened with satisfaction. “Sonya, you’re nothing like Chloe. Why would I ever scold or hit you?”
Pride surged through Sonya as she cast Chloe a sideways glance, her lips curling into a smug smile of victory.
Lena, disgusted by her hypocrisy, made a gagging motion.
Chloe sneered, “I just hope you can live up to those words one day.”
“Chloe, you’re just jealous that my mom treats Sonya so well! Have you ever thought about what you’ve done to deserve her kindness? Do you really think you can compare to Sonya?” Joanne shouted,
Just then, the massive advertising screen in the center of the mall lit up with breaking news.
“Following an investigation by the Cloudrion Fire Department into the fire at the city’s border five years ago, and after the subsequent submission of the findings to the local government, the Cloudrion City Council has decided to revoke the commendation recognizing Sonya Miller

as a firefighting heroine…”
As the newscaster’s voice echoed through the mall, Sonya’s face went pale. She staggered, nearly collapsing before she managed to steady herself.
How could this be?

The people she’d bribed had assured her with absolute confidence that the commendation and the honorary title she’d received would never be revoked.
If it was stripped away, then she…
Before she could process the thought, another news report abruptly cut in.
