Chapter 139 Retribution
“Ms. Miller, please answer. What were you thinking at the time?”
“We heard the kidnapper is the son of your deceased colleague. Will you forgive his actions?”
“Will AeroQuest Airlines terminate your contract over this incident?”
“Word is that the Cloudrion City Council has joined forces with the local fire department in investigating your failure to save your colleague. If your title as a firefighting heroine is revoked, will you accept it? Or will you protest?”
One question after another exploded in Sonya’s ears like thunderclaps, and the cameras flashed right in
her face..
She raised her hands in panic to block the cameras, but the reporters and photographers only pressed
closer.
“Move aside. Move! No comment!” Sonya shouted, trying to escape. But her protests were useless.
Curtis tried to shield her, but he was shoved aside. Vincent and Carla were also being pushed around by
the crowd so badly that their faces were squashed.
Carla shrieked, “My earring! My bag! Do you people know how much it costs? Who’s going to pay if it’s
ruined? Move, move!”
Finally, the hospital’s security guards arrived and forced the reporters back, allowing Sonya, Vincent, and Carla to practically flee into their car.
Sonya’s hair was disheveled, and her eyes were filled with panic. Carla’s makeup was smeared, and one of her earrings had been crushed underfoot. Even her luxury handbag was misshapen.
“Curtis, you’re supposed to be a man. It’s one thing if you don’t protect me, but how could you not protect Sonya? She’s your fiancee!” Carla snapped.
“I…” Curtis tried to explain himself but was cut off.
Vincent said, “Curtis, this is your fault. How could you let the reporters harass Sonya? You should’ve taken
care of them beforehand!”
Carla added, “Exactly! How could you not foresee this? You should’ve known the reporters would be here when Sonya got discharged! And my earrings and bag cost me a fortune. As my future son–in–law, you’d better buy me new ones.”
The demands for compensation and constant blame kept pouring into Curtis‘ ears.
Curtis felt incredibly frustrated. Sonya was beside him, but she didn’t say a single word to defend him.
When he’d been with Chloe, no one had ever blamed or demanded things from him like this. On the contrary, Helen and Joanne were the ones who’d criticized Chloe and always made demands of her.
Chapter 13Y ROTTIBUTION
A thought suddenly struck him. Had he ever defended her back then?
No, he’d been silent, just like Sonya was now.
Worse, when Chloe protested, he’d even complained that she was being unreasonable. He’d asked her why she couldn’t do things for his mother and sister when she was his wife.
The memories came rushing back to him. It was as if something heavy were pushing against his chest,
making him feel suffocated.
At the hotel, he walked Vincent and Carla to their room before escorting Sonya back to hers.
The moment they entered, Sonya clung to him in a panic. “Curtis, what do I do? I’m finished! Those reporters will twist everything around. It’s all the kidnapper’s and Chloe’s fault. They must have joined
hands against me!”
Curtis said, “There’s no proof of that. This storm will pass after some time, and people will stop paying
attention.”
“But what about my job? If I’m no longer seen as the firefighting heroine, AeroQuest will cancel my contract. Everything I’ve worked for will go to waste!” Sonya clenched her teeth hatefully.
Curtis said, “Honestly, it’s possible that none of this would have happened if you’d just explained your colleague’s death properly. After all, it was a dangerous situation. Even if you hadn’t saved him-”
Sonya shoved Curtis away. “What? Are you siding with the kidnapper now? You want to blame me like everyone else?”
“No, I just mean that you probably should have explained things clearly. Then, even though you wouldn’t have gotten that heroine title, at least you wouldn’t be in this mess,” Curtis said quickly.
“I did nothing wrong! I fought the fire, and I deserved the title. As for that man, he was just unlucky to get caught in the flames. The fire was too fierce, and I couldn’t save him. That’s not my fault!”
Then, she muttered repeatedly, “I did nothing wrong! Besides, not saving someone isn’t a crime!”
A flicker of disappointment crossed Curtis‘ eyes. He’d once admired Sonya for being so brave. When had she become so different from the woman he’d thought she was?
Sonya suddenly grabbed his hand desperately. “Curtis! You’ll stand by me, won’t you?”
He lowered his gaze, feeling like her grip was a shackle tying him down. “Yes, I’ll stand by you. You pulled me back from the brink of death. How could I not?”
Sonya froze, then smiled. “Right, I saved you. Of course, you’ll stand by me. You’re not heartless! That’s why I love you!”
Curtis stayed silent, feeling like something between them was slowly shifting.
Chapter 139 Retribution
In the study at the Steele residence, a bodyguard handed Brian a thick stack of documents. “Sir, here’s the information you wanted.”
“Alright, you can leave,” Brian said.
As the bodyguard left, Brian opened the files. Among them were various photographs. If Chloe had been there, she would have instantly recognized the man in the photos as Daniel.
Brian studied them closely, but when he reached one particular photo, his expression changed drastically.
His fingers trembled as he lifted it.
It was a bare–chested photo of Daniel, with a gruesome scar on his shoulder.
The scar was strikingly similar to the one in Brian’s memories. If the man he’d met back then was Chloe’s long–lost brother, then…
He suddenly felt like he couldn’t breathe.
If Chloe found out, would she blame him?
Would she leave him forever?
No, impossible.
He couldn’t even imagine Chloe leaving him.
At that moment, there was a knock on the study door. Brian jumped in fright. “Who is it?”
“It’s me!” Chloe pushed the door open and walked in.
Brian’s face instantly drained of color as he tried to shove the documents and photos into a drawer.
But his fingers betrayed him, and the stack slipped from his hands. In an instant, the documents and photos scattered across the floor.
