Chapter 126 Backfired
“Chloe, aren’t you a veteran? Don’t you love showing off how kind you are? Well, I’m giving you the chance
right now.”
Sonya’s voice rang out clearly from the recording.
The previously buzzing audience fell completely silent. Sonya’s face flushed crimson as she lunged to
snatch the phone from Chloe.
But Chloe simply held up her other hand to block Sonya. The recording continued, Sonya’s voice echoing through the studio.
“If you apologize to me and I’m satisfied, I’ll fly the helicopter and save those employees. But if you don’t apologize, and it ruins my mood, what if I make a mistake while flying? What if I can’t save them? If the
employees suffer because of the delay, it’ll all be your fault!”
As the audio ended, the audience and staff members stared at Sonya in disbelief.
Who would have thought that someone who’d been hailed as a hero could say something like this?
“No, that’s not true! None of it is true!” Sonya hurried to defend herself. “I never used anyone’s lives as
leverage. I just wanted her to apologize to me because she slandered me in the past.”
“What slander? Do you even have proof?” Chloe fired back. “If you don’t, then does that mean I can
accuse you of slandering me with what you’re saying right now?”
Sonya glared at Chloe. “You have so many ways to hide the evidence. Besides, no matter what I said that
day, I did fly the helicopter to save people!”
“Fly the helicopter to save people? Your helicopter never even made it to the rescue site,” Chloe said
coldly.
“That was so I could observe the situation! If something went wrong on your end, I would have flown over!
Sonya argued.
A rescue worker who’d been on the same helicopter as Sonya suddenly stood up and said, “But, Ms.
Miller, you said on the plane that you didn’t dare move forward because of your fiance.
“You said that if something had happened to Ms. Quall’s helicopter, you would’ve landed in a safe place first, let your fiance get off, and only then gone to rescue people.”
The revelation sent shockwaves through the studio.
Sonya’s face shifted from red to pale.
“Ms. Miller, didn’t your fiance accompany you on the helicopter to help with the rescue mission?” the host asked immediately.
The unexpected turn of events on the show had been disastrous, but it was certainly great for ratings.

“Yes, he was there to help with the rescue,” Sonya replied awkwardly.
She couldn’t very well admit that she’d only taken Curtis along to watch Chloe fail.
“Then why did you want to drop him off somewhere safe first before proceeding with the rescue mission? Didn’t you consider that it would delay the rescue efforts?” the host pressed.
A ripple of discussion ran through the audience.
The rescue worker who’d exposed Sonya spoke up again. “If Ms. Miller cared so much about her fiance, she shouldn’t have brought him on the plane in the first place. And the helicopter never even got close to the rescue site. I’m not even sure she was going there to rescue anyone at all.”
He’d disliked Sonya from the start of the flight, and seeing her now on stage, speaking with such self- righteous authority, only deepened his annoyance.
Without thinking, he let it all out.
Now, everyone’s eyes were fixed squarely on Sonya.
“Yeah, if they were really on a rescue mission, why didn’t they just fly straight to the location?”
“She even took her fiance on the helicopter! What could a man with an injured hand in a cast possibly do
to help?”
“Maybe they were just showing off their relationship in front of everyone!”
“And she actually used trapped people as leverage to force someone into apologizing. That’s disgusting. How can someone like that even have the nerve to come for a talk show?”
The audience’s murmurs grew louder and more insistent.
Sonya stood rigid, her face suddenly deathly pale. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. She had no idea how to explain herself.
How did this happen?
She’d come on the show to add another feather to her cap, boost her public image, and officially announce her relationship with Curtis.
But she hadn’t expected Chloe to have recorded their earlier conversation. And she was stunned that the rescue worker would say such things on live TV.
Now, all eyes were on her, and every camera lens was trained squarely on her face.
Suddenly, Sonya turned to the rescue worker. “How much did Chloe pay you to say that?”
The man’s expression remained serious. “I wasn’t paid by anyone. Everything I said today came from me.”
The other rescue workers in the audience nodded in agreement.
They’d also heard about Sonya’s actions during the rescue mission and believed she didn’t deserve to be

on the show.

Sonya stumbled back, as if she couldn’t take it anymore, suddenly covered her face, and bolted toward the backstage area.
“Sonya!” Curtis jumped up and quickly chased after her.
Chloe watched them go with a cold, steady gaze before calmly settling back into her seat. “I think the real heroes are the rescue workers sitting here today. They risk their lives to save others, and that spirit is something we should all admire and learn from.”
With that single statement, she steered the talk show back toward the main topic. The host quickly took control, moving on with the interview questions.
Meanwhile, as soon as Sonya darted into the dressing room, Curtis followed close behind.
“It’s all Chloe’s fault! She set me up by recording that conversation on purpose and then played it during the show to humiliate me in front of the entire country!” Sonya fumed.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it,” Curtis said calmly.
Sonya’s eyes widened, and she clutched his sleeve as if he were her last hope. “Can you handle this?”
“This show is a pre–recorded one, not a live one. I’ll speak with the production team and get them to delete any footage or dialogue involving you,” Curtis explained.
Sonya’s face lit up. Right, it wasn’t a live broadcast.
“But will they actually agree to it?” she asked, uncertainty creeping into her voice.
“There’s nothing money can’t fix,” Curtis said. To him, the solution was simple. If all the footage of her was deleted, no one would ever know about their publicly announced engagement.
Sonya finally exhaled in relief.
“Rest here for a bit. I’ll go find the person in charge of the show,” Curtis said.
“Okay,” she replied.
After he left, she was alone in the dressing room.
Just then, her phone rang. The number was unfamiliar, but the voice on the other end made her expression change instantly.
