Charles had heard every word of Michael’s phone call clearly, and his face darkened with murderous intent. 

Having witnessed Charles’s capabilities before, Michael didn’t dare confront him directly. He could only put on a fierce act and say, “Don’t think you’ll succeed just because you’ve latched onto Athena. If she can treat me this way today, she’ll treat you the same way tomorrow. Disabled women all have psychological issues-they’re especially difficult to deal with. I’m free now, so you just wait to suffer.” 

With that, before Charles could make another move, he ran off quickly. 

As soon as he entered Gabriel’s office, Charles said, “Dad, why did you let Michael leave? You should have kept him at the hospital so I could continue teaching him a lesson.” 

Gabriel patted Charles on the shoulder. “I couldn’t let him stay at the hospital-it would upset Miss Mitchell to see him.” 

Charles’s expression softened somewhat. 

Gabriel asked with a smile, “Have you gotten what you wanted 

now?” 

Charles smiled back. “Not quite yet. I’m still in my probationary

period-I haven’t been made permanent yet.” 

Gabriel chuckled. “Then you’d better work harder and try to get that permanent position soon.” 

After returning home, I prepared to handle some work. As soon as I opened my computer, I received an email from overseas. 

After reading the email, my mood soared. 

The exoskeleton I’d ordered long ago was finally ready and had been shipped to the United States. 

This exoskeleton was the most advanced technological product available, capable of controlling mechanical devices through brain signals-both comfortable and intelligent. 

This was a collaborative project with an overseas research lab, with the goal of one day being able to stand up and walk and run like a normal person. 

After two years, it had finally succeeded. 

I’d received two pieces of good news in one day. I happily touched my belly. “Baby, you really are my lucky star.” 

That evening, I received the exoskeleton. 

I hadn’t expected the delivery person to be Charles.

He carefully carried the box containing the exoskeleton into the house, then wheeled in a suitcase. 

Seeing my puzzled expression, Charles explained, “I just ran into the delivery guy at your front door, so I helped bring it in for you. Also, as your personal assistant, I should be by your side at all times. So, I’d like to move in and live with you. Would you agree to that?” 

His eyes showed uncertainty as he spoke, as if he was afraid I’d reject him outright. 

I smiled and said, “Since you’ve already brought your luggage in, you might as well stay here.” 

Charles immediately broke into a brilliant smile. 

I was about to have someone open the exoskeleton box when Charles quickly said, “Let me do it!” 

After opening the box, he carefully lifted out the exoskeleton that would serve as my “other leg.” 

Then, under my expectant gaze, Charles knelt on one knee in front of me and said softly, “Let me help you put it on and try it 

out.” 

When I saw myself in the mirror standing tall and straight just

like I had two years ago, tears instantly blurred my vision.

Charles said gently, “Try taking a few steps and see if there’s anything that needs improvement.” 

I walked back and forth a few steps. At first, I wasn’t used to it and nearly fell. 

But Charles caught me in time. 

After taking a couple of steps, I quickly adapted. My steps became lighter and more agile. 

Excitedly, I walked a full circle around the Mitchell mansion until sweat beaded on my forehead. 

I grabbed Charles’s hand and laughed. “This is wonderful! It’s perfect! It works just like natural legs!” 

Charles’s eyes became especially tender, and he laughed along with me. “As long as you’re satisfied.” 

After my excitement subsided a bit, I sat down on the sofa and took a sip of the water Charles handed me. 

That’s when I asked Charles, “Who exactly are you? What’s your purpose in getting close to me?” 

Charles’s smile instantly froze, and his speech became

I set the water glass on the coffee table, the glass making a crisp sound against the surface. “If you won’t tell me, I’m going to bed.” 

I stood up to leave, but Charles grabbed my hand and said frantically, “I’m Gabriel’s son. I got close to you because I want to pursue you!”
