Chapter 5 

The thermos hit the floor with a loud crash, soup spilling across the tiles in a steaming mess. 

Logan’s voice exploded in disbelief. “What did you just say?!” 

It felt like a sledgehammer had slammed into his chest. He staggered forward; barely 

managing two steps before his knees buckled. His assistant lunged to catch him. 

“Where is she now?” Logan choked out. “Take me to her–now!” 

They raced to another ward’s patient room. Logan shoved the door open so hard it slammed against the wall. 

“Mr. Whitmore! Please wait–you can’t go in yet!” several nurses tried to stop him, but he 

barreled past them. 

He stopped at the bedside, his whole body trembling as he lifted the sheet covering the woman’s face. Then he froze. “This… isn’t Emily.” 

A nurse rushed in, slightly out of breath. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Whitmore–this isn’t her. This woman just happens to have the same name as Miss Bennett and also gave blood earlier today. Ever since the news about Miss Cole’s accident got out, a bunch of people came in to donate. It’s not that rare to have name overlaps.” 

Logan stood frozen for a moment, then slowly lowered the sheet with shaking hands. “I’m sorry. I overreacted.” 

As he was escorted out of the room, his assistant wiped the sweat from his brow. “I’m really sorry, sir. I panicked and didn’t double–check before notifying you.” 

“It’s fine,” Logan said, voice clipped. “Just be more careful next time.” 

He let out a breath, wiping the cold sweat from his palms when no one was looking. Thank God it had just been a mix–up. 

The assistant added, “I checked again. Miss Bennett just went home.” 

Without another word, Logan turned and headed straight for the Whitmore estate. 

As soon as he walked in, the tension in the air hit him like a wall. His parents‘ faces were tight with worry.

Logan’s mind spun. The only explanation he could come up with was the blood loss from her 

donation. 

He didn’t stop to explain. He bolted upstairs and burst into Emily’s room. 

She was lying still on the bed, her face ghostly pale. Logan stood frozen by the side of the bed, fear curling tight in his chest. Her final words to him–half farewell, half confession–echoed in his mind, wrapping around him like chains. 

The truth was, he’d never hated her. What he hated was the life his parents had forced on him -the arranged marriage, the suffocating expectations. But now, as he stood here, clarity hit him like cold water. 

He was done punishing her for things that weren’t her fault. 

Looking at her motionless face, Logan made a silent vow. When she woke up, he’d make it

Eleanor let out a cold laugh. “That manipulative girl really is something else. Always playing the victim, always scheming. Lucky for us, I held on to a little insurance.” 

She pulled out her phone and tapped on a recording. 

Madison’s voice filled the room, syrupy sweet and full of scorn. “Mrs. Whitmore, do you really think forcing Logan to marry Emily will make him love her? One lie from me, a snap of my fingers, and he’s at my feet. He believes every word I say.”

Then came Eleanor’s furious voice. “You shameless little witch! Aren’t you afraid of karma?” 

Madison let out a cold laugh. The audio ended. 

Logan stood there in stunned silence, the truth sinking in like ice water through his veins. 

Eleanor placed a firm hand on his shoulder. Her voice was low, but resolute. 

“I don’t know what kind of spell she cast on you, but you need to see her for who she really is. That girl is two–faced–sweet in public, cruel in private. You just heard it yourself. This is the 

real Madison Cole.”
